As sort-of part of my job I've got to repaint a steam engine this winter, I can control exactly what the livery/lining/edging will be, but in order to do this I need the colour reference (any of RAL, Munsell or BS 4800/381C) for the colour of the unit doors for the 1959 stock in 'Heritage Livery'.
Can anyone help? I'd like to get the colour right and then hang up my brushes, as I've spent the past 20 years painting them and I'd prefer to go out on a high note.

Hang about. Why do you want to paint a steam engine in 59TS colours??

I cannot give you a part number but the doors of the 59TS heritage train are "maroon". I and the then GM Northern Line cooked up the scheme as part of the C&SLR centenary. He suggested the C&SLR original colours but I persuaded him that the 1923 scheme was better. The nearest I got to specifying a colour for the maroon was "engine lake", the colour specified in the original contracts for the 1923 Tube Stock. I had a copy then (June 1990) but I think it is now is the LT Museum archives. It did not offer a part number.
I think the colour is close to Midland Railway "maroon lake", sometimes referred to as "Derby Red". It is not as red as LMS maroon.
The painting was done by Vic Berry in his workshop next to Leicester Midland station. I think he went bankrupt but I am sure that was not due to repainting the 59TS! I doubt the records of his paint purchases still exist.
Don't Alstom still have one of the cars at Morden? Maybe they could get a colour match. Can anyone there help?

Hang about. Why do you want to paint a steam engine in 59TS colours?? 1. Because I'm painting it! 2. I've got written proof from 1902 that the engine was indeed maroon. 3. It's a good colour, will be set off with black edging and straw lining.

That gives me some sort of clue as to the direction I'm heading; however Maroons are Maroons and quite easy to make a mess with - you can head too far towards Carmine or Purple.
