They are indeed from the 80's - they have been discussed on here before, but it was some time ago now......so perhaps a fresh thread is in order...
I seem to recall that there was some sort of problem with the braking system which led to them being withdrawn early....

These are the newest locos on the network! Nos L62-67 built in 1985-6 by Metro-cammell. These locos had Kiepe Control equipment, which was far from successful! Their fate is yet to be decided (although personally I think they don't have a future!).

Couldn't they put new control equipment in L62-7, and replace the older locos with them?

That is probably the plan, but getting the funding for it would be another matter, especially when there are other more important areas.

They were less than reliable, but the fatal flaw was that their haulage capacity was smaller than the old locos

Was this a characteristic of the motors used?

Is there any plans for a new build of battery locos in the forseeable future? Some of the locos built for the Victoria Line engineers trains are coming up to 45 years old.

Aren't the diesels used on the JLE construction and the W&C closure now used in the engineering fleet? That would free up newer battery locomotives as would the use of the class 66s.
Do they need replacement though? Are they overhauled with new batteries every few years?

Think the Schomas are mainly used for shunting duties in Ruislip Depot, they're also used as match wagons when moving 96TS to other lines and I've seen a couple sitting in the "new" sdgs at Edgware.

I see the Schomas on the Met Main line after hours quite a bit too!
