A couple of points:
Why are these being replaced at certain stations - they are only about 10 years old!
When they display certain messages, can these be controlled locally. For example. there was one saying "Welcome to St Pauls station."

The current system on the Central Line allows anybody with a log in and password to insert their own message onto the dot matrix displays.
Very Handy when the last train had gone.
The DMI's are being replaced as they are scheduled to be done under the PPP when a station is refurbished. If they weren't in the scope of the PPP you'd have the current displays for another 20 odd years.

Are they being pitched or resued? Seems a waste of money to throw away still working stuff.

It's a shame, because the Central line ones are unique in being able to display 3 colours. There are some though, at West Acton and Ruislip Gardens for example, that can only show red. I always wondered why these ones were different, since you would have thought there would be a standard order for the whole iine.

There's one station, I think possibly Edgware Road SSL where one platform has a yellow DMI and the adjacent platform has a red one.

I believe the West Acton ones were some kind of trial or prototype - I recall it's mentioned in an Underground News magazine from the time. As far as displaying local messages goes, you've answered your own question - Station Supervisors can gain access to the system and display their own messages (as well as other things like change the colours, etc), however hardly anyone knows how to do it.

I think it was the first site that I saw a DMI with bright red and sunlight resistant cells.

Fair point with the electronic products comment. How does the cost of construction and installation compare with something non electronic, like a lit destination box? I assume buying and replacing an electronic destination box every ten years over a 50 year period is still cheaper than making something so archaic?

I always remember .. years ago... the one at Queensway ( I think ) being quite odd.. it had about 4 writings of text, smaller than the usual screens and always displayed no smoking at all times.. there were lots of different colours on it.. does anyone else remember this?

See what would save them even more money would be to have the same indicators as they have at West Kensington.
