I recently bought a 1945 tube map off eBay (I collect them), and I am seriously concerned that it may be a fake.
Has anyone here heard of the more valuable LU maps being faked? I know that other 'railwayana' is often faked, but an LU map?

What makes it stand out, as being a fake? paper quality? Ink/style/print quality?
I've not heard of any being copied, but it wouldn't be unknown if this was to occur, given that it is a collectors 'niche.' if you believe this to be so, get on to the Copyright office of TfL, they are normally brilliant at tracking down any perpetrators of their logo, which is fiercely protected... I don't know about copyright rules on articles that are +50 years old... I should imagine it would still stand...

What makes you suspicious? Quality of paper? Cleanliness? Assuming you have collected other maps of around that time you presumably have something to compare it with.....

It's the paper which makes me suspicious. It's so clean, smooth and creamy. It would have had to have been shut inside a book for 50 years untouched to be this good.

At the risk of sounding sacreligious you could try dampening it and trying to smudge it....... . If it's printed out it'll smudge. If genuine it won't. Not conclusive but an indicator. And yes, one of my old maps (1943 I think) is in virtually perfect condition having been tucked away in Dad's desk for aeons before he died, so that is possible. In 1956 I also got (from 55 Br..) a (spare) map which I deliberately stored and is totally perfect, only having been in the light and opened the once.

I would suggest you look over it very carefully! If it is fake it's most likely to have tiny floors. If the paper feels strange i suggest you compare it to another maps around the same era and look at the texture of the paper. It could, you never know be a very fresh map that was never opened or used.
Dampening!! NONONO this could and probably will leave a stain!

I think he means flaws, as in defects...
