I just sent the following email to Video 125 and await a response. ********************************************* Your videos of rail cab rides are not very good are they? Lots of camera shake and cutting to stations and to top it all off you ruin them with commentary. Rail buffs want to hear the sounds of the TRAINS not some guy waffling on about this that and b*gger knows what all. I hope future productions will correct these faults.

Surely it would be sensible to include both on DVDs, since they support multiple separate audio streams.

I have yet to find a DVD that lets you listen only to the traction sound. It's a bit like these bloody satellite channels that insist on putting music in documentaries as if it were a feature film. The History Channel is the worst.

Yes, the sounds are as important as the video itself. The motors working, the back round noise all make the videos more enjoyable to watch. Keep the yaking out.

Reply got today from Video 125 >
Well, is there some way of listening to the DVD's without the commentary?
That option only appears on The Steam on 35MM series and Diesel and Electric on 35 MM. All our drivers eye views are with commentary. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I am sorry to hear you are disappointed in our productions. I must say you seem to be in the minority as we have a database of 50000 customers of whom the vast majority go on to order many of our titles, in fact many of our customers have ALL of our Drivers eye views productions.
I think if our customers weren’t satisfied we would not have been in business for 21 years, alas we can’t please all the people all the time, but we sure do try as most of our customers will testify to.
Assuring you of our best attention

Hmm, sometimes the commentary can be a bit OTT, but otherwise I enjoy the DEV's from V125. I recently got the Pic one from 'em. Has anyone noticed that the Op drops the handle coming into Hatton X? The camera cuts to the station just after the handle is dropped, but I heard that all familiar 'tunk' noise... And WHO is the Op that eyeballs the camera on the ACT - CFS run? I think it would be better if possibly the commentary was scrolled across the bottom of the screen, and then commentary could be given to explain something which requires it.
Somewhat ironic, the Central Line DEV was the very first DEV I purchased.

Somewhat ironic, the Central Line DEV was the very first DEV I purchased. I've heard that 'tunk' too, defiantly the CTBC being dropped. I've got many LUL and NR DEVs from Video125 including the Central, Northern, District/Met, Picc, Met Mainline, Jubilee - all fantastic quality! I usually keep an eye out for the T/ops in the DEVs, I’ve managed to see the T/op on the handle of the Jubilee Line DEV and I think the Picc DEV T/op between Rayners Lane and Acton Town.

Personally, I like the DEVs from V125. But once you've listened to the commentary once, Rob Curling's Sky News style of presentation gets rather irksome.
I've always wondered with DEVs, are the T/Op's chosen to be in it, or are they just 'in the wrong place at the wrong time'? There must be some drivers that LUL would rather not use ;D.
My only complaint about V125 is that you don't get to hear the train, even when there is no voice over. This is particularly noticeable on the 'Uckfield Thumper' DEV. I agree with Compski, that as DVDs have an option for a different soundtrack, there should be a choice.

That reminds me of my journey last weekend. My Grandma lives in Uckfield, and it was my first journey on one of the new Turbostars. Very pleasent ride, although the air conditioning makes them a bit like the north pole, but it rather lacked the drama of the thumpers.
The direct service from London Bridge is very convenient though. However, the person on the luggage gate at London Bridge LUL replied "Where's that?" when I showed him my ticket. I managed to convince him to let me out, but it was a bit unexpected as I thought they just looked for the +. Grandma said that she has previously been assured by station staff that she couldn't possibly get a train home from there. Her standard reply is "That's funny, I came here on one."

At £17, network card return from Northampton - Uckfield for Thumper thrash was good value. Esp. if you got the six-car through train from L/B.

I used to love the Thumpers on the run to St Leonards Warrior Square in the sixties when my brother was at school there. The bouncing about between London bridge and Bromley was awesome. They also had that peculiar "squeak" from the running engine too.

No, not mice. They were powered by a giant twisted rubber band, and the frequent breakdowns were caused by it snapping and needing to be replaced.
The "electric" trains on the line between Victoria and East Grinstead were in fact clockwork.

The huge amount of the commentry depends on the commentator. On London - Waterloo and other ones, Fred Dineage does the narrating. And he is the most irritating fellow on TV! (He's a local news presenter.) He thinks alot about Fred and has no knowledge or intrest in railways. With the lack of his acting skills, the result is a very insincere commentry. Video 125 do over do it a bit, but a bit of background information wouldn't be too bad and the odd fact along the way. Not a barrage of useless information.
Too many DEV's are outdated. The District and Met is as old as i am, and things have probably changed.

Has anyone noticed how in the commentary for each LUL DEV, somewhere (ie. Earls Court), is always refered to as the 'Crewe' of the xxx line. So annoying. Maybe they should get David Maxey to do them, he always shuts up for the thrash*, knows what he is talking about and is quite amusing (IMO). *In Locomaster Profiles videos BTW, I tried to get Locomaster to do a Thumper video, but they said V125 beat them to it. Bah

The commentary can be interesting the first time, but I don't see why it's not possible to have it optional as this can be done with a DVD.
Incidentally, has anyone noticed how, incidentally, Rob Curling keeps using the word incidentally?

But then again we are all used to you having your own opinion about everything aren't we? Ironic world, eh?

Incidentally, has anyone noticed how, incidentally, Rob Curling keeps using the word incidentally? I'd have thought the video companies would have done the optional thing by now. As for incidentally, the word 'etcetra' comes up more than a couple of times on the new District DVD as well.
