Perhaps ‘Romancing the Tube’ fiction novel should have been titled as ‘Confessions of a Train Driver,’ because it is a railway fiction book. Just imagine yourself – in your 20’s and your first day of recruitment with London Underground. You are faced against a large busy network, feel lost in the subways, and have no idea how to get from A to B, with many passengers asking you for directions.
Being young and a taste for the females – you intend to think of love at first sight and if brave enough you attempt the chat-up lines without making a fool of yourself. Other staff on the network intends to wind you up as proven in the story. You face your manager for a telling off, especially being trapped in a disused tunnel without a radio and torch and some cheeky mouse runs up your trousers leg to nip your manhood, only to be taken to hospital and again, because some driver winds you up about a ghost in Acton depot playing his bagpipes.
You take promotion to become a train driver, being shifted from the District, Central and most other lines before settling down. Just imagine the events and complaints that would take place in your training if you were an easy target for pranks or just plain unlucky. How would you cope with a strike when the union’s call for a strike and you just cannot afford to take the time out of work but have no choice in the end.
This is only part of some storylines that take place. If you still require a copy – you will find ordering with WHsmith online is cheaper, because if you can pick it up at your local store – you save postage & packing.
