I know that no.12 was kept on by LT as a 'Brake Block Test Loco' - what was the purpose of these tests? Was it to try out new types of brake block, or was it just an excuse to keep no.12.
Has no.12 ever carried any livery other than met maroon and wartime grey?
Thank You,
David

According to the LURS book MET ELECTRIC LOCOS, maroon and wartime grey were the only base colours the locos have had. Different roof colours have been used though; grey, black and maroon. Also the lining and other decoration around the windows changed several times.
They were delivered with METROPOLITAN names on the sides, being changed to LONDON TRANSPORT later.
As regards to brake block testing, I certainly believe there was a genuine need for a heavy vehicle to test various compounds of brake block around for LT use.
