OK tell me something.
Why is there such a great fuss made regarding the gap between trains and the platform on London underground when the equivalent gaps on the mainline network are often much higher and larger?
I understand that the frequency and dwell times are quicker on London underground with higher hourly passenger usage per station compared to mainline but i do think the platform train interface safety dept. are a bit over eager.

You think our gaps are big - look at the gap on the NY Subway City Hall Station... or that on the South Ferry Loop! That has special retracting plates that come out from under the platform!
Thats how big the gap is!

I think, apart from being down to over zealous health & safety, its to do with letting people know there is a gap there. For example. You can clearly see a gap when you get on and off National Rail trains. It is big enough to make you think "mind the gap". With LU, you don't usually immediately notice it until you go up to the train, and because there are electrified tracks a legs length away sometimes, I think in that case its better to be safe than sorry for the few idiots who will try to step onto the train without looking!

also on the mainline, you step forward and downwards and you will watch your feet more as you go down a step whilst on the tube there isn't a step down and you can just keep walking regardless in to the gap between the train.

Willesden junction, Bakerloo platforms... a few friends were going to the Open Day at Old Oak, and we decided to walk along the Grand Uni Canal... I managed the step up from the 72ts... a friend did not, and headbutted the platform... FIVE of us tried to warn him of impending doom, alas he was so busy yakking....
Did he curse! Oh yes! The kind Booking office clerk lent us his first aid kit!
