I believe it's more related to their ability to self combust and hence have there approval removed from sub-surface stations.

But all those on Sub-surface are out of use too... I noticed those between Padd H&C and Hammersmith, all had no choccy/products in them, plus a sticker over the machine, explaining that it has been necessary to remove the machine from service.

Some have had the display cover turned round "inside out". I thought the smokey choc bars problem had been sorted?

This did happen before, a year or so ago. On that occasion it was related to fraud (you know, the old bit of paper stuck up the coin slot routine) although I'm unsure why they are out of use now.

I noticed the one on the S/B Northern platform at KX is out of service.

Those machines are "out of service" even when they are supposedly "in service"! Mind you, I haven't used one in years so perhaps they are more reliable than they used to be. Although judging by this thread, perhaps not!

Yeah, kind of a mashed up one, half a paper liner and a strip of foil... I heard that these machines got taken out because the choccy bars had to be made specially! Apart from the mechanical problems, they were good machines...
And they made a wonderful noise, like the old mechanical Imperial Co. Till Registers... tak tak... rumble rumble... ting!
