Any stories/moans/complaints about attempting to travel today? I noticed that the SSL is a mess thanks to signal failures and obstructions, parts of the tube lines are also banjaxed and that at least two London termini are OOS due to obstructions and OHLE damage.
Was the evening commute fun today? ;D ;D

Yes, I didn't have to do it! ;D Thankfully, that is. Just got my travel alert text for the Picc - "Severe delays due to earlier obstructions on the track" - That would mean an extra 45 minutes on top of the 75 it usually takes!

One road in Cheddar was closed when I got home from work, but luckily its not one I have to use although it did make the one I use much busier. Fortunately there were no large lorries on it when drove down it as it is only just big enough for them.

I had to wait at least three minutes for a Central Line train to show up, total chaos!

Yeah, the parts underground actually seemed to cope a bit, most trouble was on the ends of lines where trees tend to live near tracks. Or rather, lived. Look at this Taken from Annie Mole's Blog.

As well as the usual bits of tree, on the District we had a satellite dish and a complete window! Plus some plasterboard that escaped from a builder's yard.

Rather ironic how the Drain managed to run a good service actually, seeing as it's normally broken with a signal failure nowadays after the renewal..

FGW had disruption in three places due to unsafe roofs, Chippenham and Great Malvern were two but I can't remember the third.

Everything worked this morning. There was a power cut at King's Cross, making the station rather spooky and closing the Underground, but luckily I use the Thameslink and so braved the traffic on Euston Road as usual. Those going elsewhere were directed to Euston.
This evening was rather less enjoyable. I finally got in to Cambridge at 10:24pm, having departed City Thameslink at 7:30pm and King's Cross at 8:30pm. I would usually leave at least an hour earlier. It all went horribly wrong when the wires came down on the Down lines at New Barnet. The very dubious solution was to reverse on to the Up line, then run wrong road all the way to Potters Bar. Reversing took 15 minutes per train, and there were at least 3 ahead in the queue. It was ok from there, apart from some extended dwell times. Many people then had to get where they were going (mostly on the West Anglia line) by taxi. Luckily I live 5 minutes from Cambridge Station.

Looks as though you can't win ! Either the wind blows down the O/H Line or it blows debris onto the current rails! :-)

I remember reading somewhere (possibly last winter) that the reason the ECML OHLE is so vulnerable to high winds is that it was designed with the minimum number of posts as a cost-cutting measure.

I got stranded in Cambridge last night, ended up sleeping on a co-worker's floor. Saw your train come in about half 10 actually, I was wondering why nothing was appearing on the arrival boards

And most train websites had the 'unavailable' message, due to heavy traffic...

At least 12 obstructions on the track were removed from the Met alone becasue of strong winds on the day.
And a cold snap is expected this week with snow showers forecasted.

Forgive me, I'm still traumatised by my 7 hour journey from Canary Wharf to Stanmore when 4cm of snow fell over London in January 2003 causing the whole transport network to come to a standstill...
I didn't take the most direct route of course ;D
