hey,
I was looking around at station diagrams and noticed that there is infact a system called MailRail!
Unfortuanately its been mothballed, but does anyone know if its being planned to be reopened?

Hi
No- sadly there are no plans to re-open it at the moment. The main problem with it is that the sorting offices which it serves have had their work and distribution routes changed in recent times.
It's a real shame; MailRail was a fascinating system. I got to look around it at Mount Pleasant one night during Christmas Operations in 1991.
The current financial climate within Royal Mail seems to be hampering any sensible thinking.

But, as I seem to remember, some of the offices it served, are closed now... Perhaps this system could be sold off and used for unground cycleways or similar. I know the tunnels are smaller in diameter than the tube ones, but how small I don't know...

The current financial climate within Royal Mail seems to be hampering any sensible thinking. What's so sensible about keeping a system open that serves no purpose because it can only bring mail from a place where it isn't to a place you don't want it to go and only costs money? The only purpose for keeping it open would be for rail-geeks like us to have a tour once every ten years or seeing the occasional new photo appear on the web.
