They were all doing their best to destroy the 38 with their feet.

I'm glad you don't mind Chris. I must give credit to you and the senior museum curator,(correct me if i'm wrong) who set up this exclusive access for me on the day for my MSTS cab projects. You will be rewarded. P.S if you thought what the kids in the 38 were doing was bad you should have seen what they were upto in the 72 stock cab. Talk about Fisher Price Activity Centre.

Must. Not. Kill. Small. Children. Thats one of the problems with this sort of event, enthusiasts feel that they have the exclusive right to be interested. I am sick and tired of over zealous enthusiasts and staff alike constantly breathing down my four year olds neck at these open days. He was well behaved and held my hand for the most part yet I lost count of the times someone told me to ensure that he didn't touch or put his feet on something. I think it's time you all remembered that these are open days and as such anyone is entitled to come along. Most current enthusiasts, and probably staff for that matter, started their interest as youngsters. If you lot keep putting them and their parents off from attending then their will be no future generation of railway enthusiasts to carry this work on. The railways and their associated preservation societies would be in a very sorry state if that were to happen. The only time during the whole day my son did do something wrong was dealt with in an overhand and wholly inappropriate manner. My son inadvertently touched a static item and a helper grabbed his arm. First of all, in this day and age, it is inappropriate to touch a child unless they are about to have an accident and you are assisting them in some way and secondly this is grounds for common assault. The gentleman in question was given a very quick and sharp reminder of those facts and I trust he never does anything like that again because next time the parent concerned may not be as restrained as I was.

Ahh, I took a piccy or the green Bristol RE, there was a group of children playing catch around it [despite the barriers at back of the vehicle], they saw me waiting to take a piccy and eventually moved clear... A few other enthusiasts also waited for me, which I was pleased with... But then, the good day was spoiled by an over zealous stall holder, who when i picked up a small badge in a opaque bag, and not being able to see the detail clearly, asked if I could remove it from the bag to have a look at it; the sticker on the bag claimed it was a Central London Railway 'Long Service Award medallion', so, obviously I was mildly interested... Anyway authority granted, I opened the bag, only for it to be prised from my fingers and held at least four feet from my eyes, so I could not read it... I asked if I could a closer look, and was told it was too valuable to be let out of sight... I just walked away, mildly amused at the paranoia of the vendor!

This is what I mean, it gets a little too serious. I went along to have an enjoyable day and thought that everyone else did too, it seems some people have ellevated their interest to a whole new level which IMHO is missing the point in the first place. Whilst I don't advocate kids using a 38ts as a playground, it (like many of the other exhibits) saw many years of service during which it got an awful lot of abuse and shockingly it survived. I think it is great that kids are taking an interest and furthermore I think it is wonderful to see the old stock full of life again (all human life!). I really do think everyone needs to lighten up, sorry if I have ranted a bit here!

I don't think it's a rant at all prjb, I think you're absolutely right. When I was a younger transport enthusiast (from ages 5 - 10) my mum took me to the odd bus rally and to the museum at Covent Garden. I still remember the feelings of middle aged transport buffs looking at me and wishing I wasn't there. As if because I was young I wasn't allowed to be interested in transport. I have met loads of unfriendly people in my activities with transport, and it won't change too soon

Yeah, I get that feeling too when at Transport Gala's; really feel like I am out of place, because you wait paitently for other who are obviously taking pictures/ making videos etc, and then take one yourself after everyone else has finished, and you get the typical tut-tut-tutters.
I had to laugh at an event in July 1994... Steam special due through Ashford in Kent... Spotted a freight coming from the Channel tunnel, slowly, due to a signal check... saw steamer special [35028] heading to Folkestone on the VSOE, again slow due to a signal check... 12 ECS comes in from East yard and stops in platform 2... Steam special could not be seen through the 12 car... I was stood right next to the signal phone at the end of the platform... As I had a tripod, I cheated... simply put the camera on to 'timed' and hoisted the tripod up above my head... got some strange looks, but I got a sort of okay piccy! It was then claimed by some 60-ish bloke that I had ruined his shot by a; standing in the spot where I was standing, and b; caused a shadow. I just thought, well, i was going to offer you a pic of my 'elevated view' should it come out, but as he spoke to me like that he can fox trot oscar!
it was alledged the Signalman had allowed the 12 car ECS to come into the platform deliberately... this was found to be true, when I liased with the friendly station staff... whom I still know now!

Excellent photos Darren....are the memories of those 38ts on the Bakerloo They sure are. Back when i was i wee 8 year old in the early 70's off for a day trip to Dollis Hill (now Jubilee) to see my nan. My younger brother and i would sit just outside the station on a wall at the north side of the sation entrance which looks to be some electricity transformer enclosure now. We spent hours watching the 38TS stopping and the A stock hammering through

What a small world, that was about the time (70 to 73) I was traveling for my job, based out of E&C. Loved running that stretch between Finchley Rd and Wembley pk along side the A stock, then onto Stanmore. To bad the Jubilee stole it
