Hi, I've just joined the forum and noticed on a inital ferret about some interest in the 83ts stored about the railway. As I had some photos of the ones at CFS I thought I'd stick 'em on the interweb in case anone fancies a look. They're at... photosbysteve.fpic.co.uk/c976880.html...enjoy! Cheers, Steve.

Thank you for those interesting photos Steve. I can't say I 'enjoyed' looking at them though. The graffiti is much less appealing than the proper livery is...

Why don't LU just send them to the scrap yard? Surely it would now be rather difficult to return them to service, if there was any need for them to be used in service?

Maybe the Island Line might have them.

Is it even possible to refurbish or even restore those trains?

Very interesting pictures, I have one memory of these trains, i was heading to Stanmore from Baker Street and looked out of the window as an unreferbished A Stock overtook us. I think the driver even waved , oh well enough reminiscing. Refurbishment is possible, although it would be extremely expensive now due to their condition. I'd love to see them refurbished, as despite what people say they are apart of our history no different to Q Stock or 1938 Tube Stock. Perhaps we should establish a committe and raise funds to purchase one lol.

It would be nice if they preserved a whole train instead of one DM car. I don't see them entering service anywhere even if they were refurbished. By the way, how many of the 83ts are left? I know for sure that there is still one at Uxbridge depot, stephenk has recent photos of it, and I'm guessing those ones are still at cockfosters, but are there any more left? (I read somewhere that there were a pair actually welded to the sidings at south harrow, but I can't recall where I read it or if it is even true.)

Doesn't the London Transport Museum have a DM car?

Doesn't the London Transport Museum have a DM car? Yes, 83TS Driving Motor Car 3734 is in the Depot Museum at Acton.

My, oh, my. Those 83TS trains look AWFUL. The graffiti can be covered by painting the train. The windows, well put new glass. They look terrible.

Maybe the Island Line might have them. I have to admit, I'm rather surprised Island Line didn't take advantage of LU's stock renewals and buy some replacement stock for the line on the cheap. I'd have thought the 59s were the perfect replacement for the island's 38s.

Shame Stagecoach won't take up LUs offers because there are always doubts about the line Part of the new South Western franchise should've included new rolling stock for the Isle of Wight.

Quoting from the latest edition of RAIL due on the shelves from 14 Feb, " there are no new trains in sight for the Isle of Wight" (page 14: Rail 559). This article was written on the context of South West Trains taking over a 10-year franchise for trains out of London Waterloo from 4 February onwards (includes the Island Line) - whether they will therefore fast-track replacement stock (perhaps 67/72 ts from LU) only time will tell

If the 38s still run OK then there's not much incentive to replace them.

If the 38s still run OK then there's not much incentive to replace them. Conversion and shipping costs would probably have been bourne by the RoSCo and repaid through higher leasing charges. How long the 38s last depends, I suspect, on how much Stagecoach are paying the RoSCo (HSBC Rail) in leasing charges and how high the maintenance costs on the units are.

Stagecoach will be paying DfT Rail a premium for the privilege of running the SWT franchise in it's last 5 years. The only way new trains would be brought to the island is if they can agree very favourable terms with a RoSCo - which is looking highly unlikely, given the threats of a Competition Commission enquiry into leasing charges coming from DfT Rail and the way the RoSCos have responded to it!

Why does the train operator have to use a RoSCo? If they can get them cheap enough, what's to stop them buying their own trains outright?

If they can get them cheap enough, what's to stop them buying their own trains outright? Nothing. Stagecoach own the two Lymington Pier line units, outright. It does leave them in the awkward position of having stock they can't do anything with should they lose the franchise, though.
