The Pullman set and 2 x 67s went via Virginia Water and Byfleet Curve to and from Southampton Eastern Docks last Saturday, as there is ongoing engineering work east of Weybridge weekends throughout October. I have never seen so much traffic on the Windsor Lines! 450s, 442s, 444s...

Oracle,
The engineering works are track renewal works at Surbiton and crossover renewal at Weybridge.
I remember the last track renewal works at Surbiton, only about 4 years ago... did the slow line at Surbiton on a 442... very rare.
Having said that, I've done pretty much every SWT line physically possible on a 442... (not Reading though, as they don't fit in... too wide!)

Hi TC! My crowning glory was back in 1996 I think it was when we did the Queenstown Road ladder to the Windsor line*..I think it may have been the Windsor reversible even, on the 0905 from Southampton. I missed out on Brockenhurst P1 on the Up direction when they were terminating at Brockenhurst...no idea if they used the Down-Up 15 mph crossover before LC or ran into P3 and then reversed. Mind you, P4 from the New Milton direction would be rare as they seem to only use P4 for Wareham-Brockenhurst stoppers. I would have liked to have wheedled a trip on the Waterloo-Farnborough Mains a while back...Down Slow-Down Fast then reverse over trailing cross-over to the Up Fast then Up Slow.
Oh! I doubt a 442 would fit in P5 at Southampton..but who knows! A 450 will!
* I wonder if they will be using the ladder in both directions 28/29 October with partial closure of Waterloo? That and the Nine Elms Junction cross-overs as every weekend it seems.

To do the entire slow line between Battledown Flyover & Weybridge (and then the Xover to the fast line) then you need to be on the 2110 Weymouth - Waterloo (arrives 0101, normally runs early though...). You can then return via East Putney on the 0105 Waterloo - Soton. I've done the Brockenhurst platform loops in both directions on a 442. Did the Lymington down in 2003 following a failed 442 in the main down platform, and I've done the Wareham stopper in a 442, on a Wareham stopper in December last year. I've done the Xover north of the LC too during engineering works a while back. Have you done the crossovers at Bournemouth? Did the one across the sidings following a failed 442 while they held in P4, the ones north of Bournemouth in 03 and last year... 03 I did the Down - Up north of Bournemouth, and last year did the Up - Down when there was a 442 operating one of the London - Bournemouth Sunday services (a 444 had failed and all they had was a 442 to replace it!). Did the ones south of the station on the same day following a massive points failure on one of the crossovers... was a nice treat on the day of my blood test I guess... A 442 will fit in P5 at Southampton, I've done it! I've got a picture somewhere ... I'll get it out. I guess you are in awe... . North of Southampton I've done all the lines on a 442, the Up Slow following a train failure on the up fast (and again for no apparent reason the next day...) the Up Fast as normal... Down Fast as normal... and the Down Slow following the Fareham diversions. Done all platforms at Haslemere & all platforms at Woking, haven't done the through line at Havant though (now lifted ). Done all platforms at Eastleigh as well as both roads... also done the Down between Eastleigh and Winchester in the Up direction in single line working. Done Wallers Ash goods loops... etc... I can also say I've done EVERY platform except 1-4 & 19 at Waterloo in a 442! Done 19 in a HST though so I think we can let that one go. As there is no service between London & Weybridge on the mains in December (I think), I think your best chance of doing those ladders will be then. Did you try and stay on the train during the New Milton terminators? If you speak nicely to the guards and say you are a track basher they sometimes let you stay on when reversing...

You can then return via East Putney on the 0105 Waterloo - Soton. The 2110 has been discused before...it is a prime candidate to run via Wimbledon and Point Pleasant Junction and even via Chertsey then Windsor lines if it is going to hit engineering works. I have done the Farnborough, Weybridge and even just before Hampton Court Junction Up Slow-Fast/Main cross-overs when the 442s used to call at Farnborough ten years ago. I gather that the latter is used by the two morning peak Portsmouths via Cobham? I have only done the opposite direction ex-Waterloo to Pompey via Cobham
P5 in the Down is extremely rare I gather, and now cannot be done in the Up direction as there is a fixed red at the platform end. It used to be used by the Eastleigh-Lymington I suggest.
Did the ones south of the station on the same day following a massive points failure on one of the crossovers... was a nice treat on the day of my blood test I guess...Not had that pleasure just into P2! I am sure I did the bay P1 in the late Sixties when they had the through roads. Hang on! 1979 on the Vulcan Venturer we did P2 and then crossed to the Down.
A 442 will fit in P5 at Southampton, I've done it! I've got a picture somewhere ... I'll get it out. Photo please! Got a 450, and green 3-CIG on film and that's it!I guess you are in awe... . North of Southampton I've done all the lines on a 442, the Up Slow following a train failure on the Up fast (and again for no apparent reason the next day...) the Up Fast as normal... Down Fast as normal... and the Down Slow following the Fareham diversions. Think we must have as well when we went to Town via Fareham from Ashurst. It took me years to achieve having travelled through Southampton Central Platforms 1 to 4 in both directions! Also both tunnel lines.Done all platforms at Haslemere & all platforms at Woking, haven't done the through line at Havant though (now lifted ). When we went through Havant months back they were putting in new cross-overs, but the remaining through road was there...used to reverse the De-icing and leaf-clearing EPB in the past...has it gone now as well? Done all platforms at Eastleigh as well as both roads... also done the Down between Eastleigh and Winchester in the Up direction in single line working. Done Wallers Ash goods loops... etc... I can also say I've done EVERY platform except 1-4 & 19 at Waterloo in a 442! Done 19 in a HST though so I think we can let that one go. P19 was used by our 444 two weekends ago. They were also using 1-4 and I can only imagine that this was for the Pompey via Worcester Park trains.
As there is no service between London & Weybridge on the mains in December (I think), I think your best chance of doing those ladders will be then. Did you try and stay on the train during the New Milton terminators? If you speak nicely to the guards and say you are a track basher they sometimes let you stay on when reversing... I wanted to go via NM but the kids wanted to go the other direction to London! I have however done Eastleigh-Southampton Parkway on the Down line when they did single line working. I am suitably impressed all the same...very impressed. It takes time and effort and money to tick off those important bits of track. 19th May: I went to Brockenhurst and the green CIG was sick so 450084 was doing the Lymington shuttle instead [traction motor problem]! Trains were arriving in P2 and then heading off on the Down line and then reversing and coming back into P2, and also P1, using the rarely-used cross-over at the Up end of P1. As mentioned avove there is a cross-over from the Down to Up south of the Level Crossing and vice versa with GPLs, but it seems that there is no signalled move so this must be for non-passenger use only in the Up direction? www.nostalgiaroad.co.uk/brockenhurst1.jpgNote there was the 10-car WES train in P1, and 444034 in P3, with 450084 in P1. www.nostalgiaroad.co.uk/brockenhurst2.jpg

The 2110 is indeed a normal suspect to go via the East Putney curve, but if the 0105 goes via the curve, the 2110 generally doesn't - it's a sort of run as required service! Regarding Southampton, the way to do the platforms are as follows: Up Fast - all trains on this one are booked to go in Up, except the first Voyager of the day which comes in as ECS Up Slow - Portsmouth & Southsea shuttle service for down, Totton - Romsey for up Down S - Romsey - Totton for down, Soton - Westbury for up Down F - All services to Bournemouth for down, FIRST Westbury - Soton stopper for up The Pompey via Worcester Park trains, were they formed of 450s, if they were 444s they'd have to have been 1x444 only as 1-4 can only take 8, hence why they are used for suburban work. You can still do the P1 bay, 1756 Southampton - Bournemouth stopper on Monday - Fridays, connects with the 1635 off Waterloo, operates M-F only. Did the Hampton Ct Junction crossovers in a 442 I'm afraid chap! When the 442s were operating via Fareham, Woking was completely closed and so did the Wessie in both directions via Cobham. The US - UF and DF - DS were in full usage. It's pretty easy to do the Farnborough crossovers though, 2305 WAT - POO and the 2111 BMH - WAT. If you want irregular platforming at Waterloo, then Sundays are your friend at the moment...! 450084 actually got out of the branch by running the final service into Brockenhurst P2. That particular move is only permitted when the branch is not operated by a slammer as the HSE restriction is that slammer is only permitted to operate in passenger service between Brockenhurst P4 and Lymington Pier. The move you mentioned at Brockenhurst is actually fully signalled but for operational convenience at Brockenhurst (it is easier to shunt at Brockenhurst due to the ... how to put it ... unreliability of the signals!) they shunt. Thanks! a) The Down S platform, P3, is also used by the Victoria- or Haywards Heath or whatever it is running to/from, Southampton SOUTHERNS. They either then stable or go and hide on the Up Goods Loop or whatever it is called! b) By P1 bay do you mean what would be P5? It seems not to be signalled for passengers, with GSL only but may be wrong! It seems that P3 is split into P3a and P3b...the Southerns are in say P3b and then you can have the Southampton-Bristol TM or Swindon single-car disel unit in P3a. There is also a split on P4, with P4a and b being the Down split..they use high tech when that happens.... a board! They combine in gthe Up direction in P1 usually. c) The P1-4 at Waterloos in the morning was definitely a 444, but by evening they were using P18 and 19 for the Southampton lines, and the usual platforms for Portsmouth. d) Two weekends ago the 444 we were on ran Up F-Up S after Basingstoke, stopped at Fleet and Farnborough, then S-F then Up F-Up S and thence via Byfleet curve. Of course this applied in the reverse as well. Pity 'twas not a 442! Regarding Brockenhurst, the Mk1 units are also permitted to use platform 1. I have never seen anything but Mk1s use platform 4 except for the time I saw Iris II pass through, and also a 159 standing just beyond the platform on its way to Bournemouth TC. I have seen 442s use platform 1 a few times and even saw a Voyager in there once back in 2003 just after they replaced HSTs.
Regarding New Milton, how would a train reverse there? There is no crossovers there I believe, would it have just been a Wrong Directon Move (WDM) to Brockenhurst or Bournemouth?
I have done diverted Weymouth services via Cobham and Guildford / Havant / Fareham. I have also done Southampton Tunnel on the up line going towards the station (only to arrive on the DOWN platforms at Southampton Central) and a Southampton Airport Parkway terminator in a 450 that was diverted via Richmond and Staines, which arrived in the up platform from Eastleigh using a WDM over the facing crossover south of the station. (Oracle, did you mean the UP platform as towards London Waterloo is the up direction?).
I managed that Farnborough move once as well on a 159 going towards Basingstoke:
Arrive at Farnborough on Down Slow, cross to Down Fast, reverse, Down Fast to Up Fast, reverse, Up Fast to Basingstoke then cross to Down Fast.
One of the best ones I've done was a 159 going into Bournemouth TC during the Rail Gala in 1998, which left Bournemouth platform 3 and reversed in the down platform at Branksome to access the depot. The down platform was also used on the return journey, with the extremely rare opportunity of using the trailing crossover to get on to the up line! The Networker Classic was on display there too, coupled to a Mk1 EMU trailer for comparison.
Regarding the 450 covering the Lymington service, is this the only time this has happened? Where was the other CIG?

There is a crossover... This is the rough layout. NEW MILTON
###################### S --------------------------------------------- / --------------------------------------------- EOS S S ###################### S is Signal, EOS is End of Shunt, and # is platform. Saw a 450 using platform 4 tonight chaps - the slammer was SPADing past the signal controlling the branch - spoke to the driver and he didn't know the slammer could use 1. He doesn't even know how thats possible due to the layout! New Milton shunts are performed as follows: * Arrive from London Waterloo and enter platform (detach rear 5 at Brockenhurst *this is important*) * Tip out the train and then proceed at 10mph towards the end of the shunt * Get to end of shunt (it's only enough for 8 car) and shut train down, change ends * Signaller operates shunt sig (controlled by BM box incidentally...) to allow train to depart over crossover at 5mph. Regarding the 450 on the Lymmie, this only occured as a result of engineering works. 1498 was rostered to do the work during the New Milton engineering works (the shunt...) but suffered a traction motor blowout while starting her up in the morning. As a result, the service ended up as a bus on the Saturday, and a Desiro was sourced for operations on a Sunday. The first train on the Sunday was tested even though the line has already been cleared for the units (test runs about a year and a half ago). Southampton Airport Parkway has one bi-di platform (the up platform...), it's a shunt movement so is used with special permission only. Incidentally, had quite a fun trip on a 442 today, 5 car Wessie (booked 10)... departed Woking 10 down, arrived Waterloo 3 down! The driver really thrashed the thing down.... Incidentally, the 450 was in P4 as a result of a fatality at St. Denys (originally a trespasser incident but a train slammed through at 70mph apparently and killed the poor chap ). Meant that most of the southbound services towards Southampton were departing at least 20 minutes late as all were arriving 1 hour late... services are running just about OK now though.

Err - didn't notice that proboards broke code... vBulletin doesn't... The crossover is just south of the station so trains need to tip out before shunting.

Was this installed recently? I used to pass through there several times a week from September 2002 to August 2004. The last time I travelled through New Milton was on the slammer railtour in September 2005, and I don't ever remember there being any crossovers between Brockenhurst and Bournemouth except for at those stations.

Nope - are in Quail (from 2002 IIRC) ... and have been there for years! They don't create that much of a judder though as they are generally locked in position.
