I reminded myself when replying to a thread about achronyms that about 25 years ago we went to a LURS ("London Underground Railway Society") monthly meet in Hammersmith and unfortunately our then Chairman Piers Connor had to announce that our guest speaker had to call off as he had had a traffic accident. In its place Piers decided on the spur of the moment, which was atypical, of having a question and answer session from the floor.
The topics raised were quite fascinating, and the answers illuminating. Then someone asked a question "What is the flashing light on battery locos called?". I never even knew that they had one/two! So I was enthralled to hear the answer. It must have been some new acronym, which I had mever heard before. Piers replied that he had no idea, and so asked a senior member (possibly Gordon Hafter or was it Brian Hardy?) and asked him..."X, you should know...yes, what is it called?". The answer came back after a shrug to the effect that "Well, it's a flashing light!."
Duh!
