Thumper fans take a look at cjolly.mysnaps.org.uk/c862086.html! Ahh, memories of these lovely units... 75mph down the Uckfield Branch, power handle fully open, amazing sound.

If you like Thumpers, go here: www.hsups.org.ukwww.hastingsdiesels.co.ukI remember coming back from an appalling day in Rye on one. We had a bit of bother departing Ham Street on returning to Ashford. Rainin' cats & dogs it was, and driver was being just a tad over-ambitious in the use of the power handle, caused an overload trip!

I like the internal plans on the first link - the Thumpers certainly had an interesting layout. It makes me want to go and explore round one myself!! Mind you I did have a ride on them on Ashford - Hastings a couple of years ago, but never got the chance to re-visit them.

Lovely stuff. I remember being on 205 012 in that very hot spell in June 2003, the engine kept shutting down due to overheating. Poor thing

I remember an extraordinary journey when they were on Reading-Basingstoke.
We were sat right behind the cab and it seemed the driver was on traction training. Apart from all the obvious stuff, he kept doing emergency stops (fortunately on dry rails). After every such stop there was much shouting and swearing: it seemed like the 'trainee' was an old hand, on new traction, and resented being told what to do by some 'stupid little b*gger'
Unfortunately we had to run for a connection at Basingstoke, so we never got to see the poor trainee (or should that be poor trainer?).
