Ahh, the Ilford 306. The Shenfield Electric. 75mph, dates from around 1949, designed as a 6.125kv set. Sat in that very unit ages ago at an open day, and what luxury fairy soft seats they were...

Slight error there T/op. 306's were designed as 1,500v DC units. Converted in the early 1960's. When first converted there was an awful lot of trouble with flashovers and explosions in the transformers I believe.

Woodhead route comes to mind, but can't be sure. That grey matter is having trouble remembering important things now it's 29 years old... ;D

i hope that's a continental comma (so a decimal point, rather than a thousands seperater) 6.125MV is rather a lot, whereas 6.125kV (note: lowercase k for kilo, uppercase V for Volt) is more sensible! Simon

Sam The LNER designed units on the Manchester - Hadfield / Glossop services were almost identical to the Shenfield services. Whereas the ER converted it's units to AC, the LMR kept the 1500V DC system until the mid-eighties, when the line was re-electrified to 25kV AC and the units were scrapped. BTW, the LM units were class 506, as all LM region DC units were in the 5xx classes under TOPS.

i worked on that when i done my work experience at ilford in 1994 we were re-riviting some of the panels on it
also if you ever see around class 313 unit 333 i found the problem with it as it was sitting in the depot for over 2 weeks and they couldnt find the fault (thyristor bank 3 failed) it gave the sort of jerky movement as a C stock
