"WATERLOO & CITY LINE: Suspended due to excessive dust on platforms."
I'm sure there is a good reason for suspending a line because of excessive dust, and presumably there must be a reason for there being excessive dust - but this has got to be one of the stranges reasons for disruption to any train service I've ever seen!

this has got to be one of the stranges reasons for disruption to any train service I've ever seen! The strangest one I ever saw was, "The train service via Bank is temporarily suspended due to a cat under a train at Euston".

It's certainly a change from the usual excessive moist. ;D

Well, on a section of line that has had weekend works on it, I suppose a certain amount of dust will be dislodged and fly around. Drilling and all that.
I have had passengers come up to me complaining their clothes are all dusty when they have travelled on a stretch of line that had work done on it a few hours previously.
The substandard will love this, it just isnt good pr though for TFL.
EDIT: Just seen this item on teletext, what I said above was the case, platforms were caked with dust, but more importantly, drivers couldnt see signal aspects clearly.

There was a grinding train down there this weekend. obviously metronet didnt clean up after themselves. there is a special spray availalble. which u spray on the affected areas which sticks the dust together.maybe it was to much for them to think forward that far as to there would be dust....tut tut

They did have an overrun this morning, so too little time? But an overrun till 1630... this is a bit excessive!

I wonder if opening the line, then reclosing it for emergency engineering counts differently on the various performance factors etc to a significant engineering overrun?

I think Metronet and LU are having a row over this. Yesterday, after the emergency cleaning, the tunnel was considered clean enough to operate again. This morning, after a night of cleaning, it suddenly is too dusty again to operate.

As far as i understand it (i am no expert in this) they get fined for not running trains. This would mean the reason for not running is not relevant (except probably if the reason is beyond metronet's control, like the 7/7 bombings).

I know that this is neither the time nor the place but the Drain isn't exactly a good advert for the extended line closures they want to implement.

Is the W&C the line that is most suspended, due to every sort of failure imaginable?
It cant go a week without being suspended.

You have to admit though, they can't exactly part suspend the line either.... ;D

Perhaps you could have some reversing practice in the Waterloo depot???

They could have taken the oppertunity to make the entire line bi-di signalled. That way if there were a problem in one direction, the other could be used both ways as on a 'one engine in steam' principal

That way if there were a problem in one direction, the other could be used both ways as on a 'one engine in steam' principal Would be good for enthusiasts, but there's no business case for it. Such a service could only run in the off-peak, because in the peak the platforms would get so overcrowded with people it'd be considered unsafe. Even in the peak, it could still be considered unsafe to run only one train at one time. Plus, how often would it be used? (And, an even better question, how many engineering weekends would it have taken to put right Mr Metronet? ;D)

A bit more info: An alternative and a bit more informative news report than news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/london/6206828.stm Coxster posted at #7 above, is at: london-underground-news.newslib.com/story/6879-70/If you compare the stories, Metronet state the reason for creating the dust is "prudent, responsible, and follows best practice..." So who forget to specify in the contract Metronet should clean up and remove the dust afterwards? Or was the bag on their vacuum cleaner full? As the "dust" was presumably finely ground metal, have any drivers noticed their cab screens have looked like they'd been through a sandstorm recently?

Nah, they didn't have a Safety case for the modded Vax.
I wonder if they have solved the pidgeon problem at Waterloo?
