Does anyone have the details of the occasion when an SR steam driver tried to take his loco onto the W&C? It happened ( I think) just after the last war.

I didnt think that it would possible with the W&C being isolated from the other lines.

I vaguely remember hearing somewhere that someone did somehow manage to get a steam loco stuck vertically in the access hole, and the only way to remove it was to cut it up on site!
Shame I can't remember where I saw it...

Does anyone have the details of the occasion when an SR steam driver tried to take his loco onto the W&C? It happened ( I think) just after the last war. Tuesday 13th April 1948 11:59am to be exact. Two loaded wagons were being shunted onto the lift when the lift table began to tilt under the weight and this dragged two further wagons and the locomotive (M7 No 672) into the pit. All the wagons were damaged beyond repair but the locomotive was only slightly damaged. It had to be cut up however as the lift superstructure prevented it being lifted out by the railway's break down cranes. The lift itself also suffered extensive damage and was out of action for many months. The cause of the accident was attributed to the mecahnical failure of one of the pawl mechanisms designed to support the lift table while trains enter or leave the lift in its raised position.

Thanks Harsig - I KNEW someone would have the answer! I knew a loco ended up in the pit of the lift, but no more than that.
