Don't know whether you've seen it, but here is a video about the ELLX, mostly about phase 1, and is fairly old, as Highbury is phase 2. On to the question: while adding more trains (though short, and go to a less popular place to the north than currently), wouldn't the extensions reduce capacity on the Brighton Main Line, and also through Crystal Palace, and possibly West Croydon (IIRC, WC is getting some improvements, but CP isn't). Also, NR service levels will remain as now, wouldn't they - it wouldn't be good if other service was cut? (though some rationalisation might have to take place, to remove things like London Bridge - London Bridge/Victoria via Forest Hill and Crystal Palace, which will have terminating trains in the way). Dare I suggest that the southern destinations might be better off changed? I'll have a think about it, but Victoria instead of Clapham Junction and Crystal Place (using both South London Vic-LB routes, diverting the LB end to ELL, and upping frequency.) with NR services doing LB-Clapham Junction rather than Overground sounds like a good start in reducing reversing problems at Crystal Palace and also giving a higher frequency to a London terminus (Victoria) from South London Line stations, as opposed to a higher frequency to the orbital line. The SLL is unfortunately both radial and orbital. The south London rail network is a bit of a mess in terms of easy to understand service patterns, especially in the Central Section, which unfortunately will be complicated more with ELL trains.

The trouble is paths into Victoria are at a premium in the peak - hence ideas for 10 car trains on some of the routes - and the rest are very challenging due to the interfaces in the Ccroydon area with main line trains off the 2 key routes - plus the non availability of grade seperation for Thameslink (FCC) which drives them at peak periods via the Crystal Palace / Tulse Hill route.
Its a nightmare for pathing at the moment - but there is a route utilisation study taking place now to try and sort out interfaces for the future and best achievable service plans .
