Now that Shoreditch is gone and Whitechapel is the northern terminus, has there been any change in peak hour reliability on the ELL? I'm mainly curious to know whether or not the availability of two platforms to reverse in during the peak hours makes a difference or not.

According to WTT 9 obtained via FoIA -
Peak trains operate every 5.5 minutes on the trunk route and 11 mins on either branch and stepping back has been introduced at Whitechapel.
All trains use p5 to reverse with the exception of train 174 in the mornings which is a staff service.

Wow, only 11 minutes to each terminus? You'd think that with a scissors crossover and two platforms available, a more frequent service could be run (i.e. a 4 min service to Surrey Quays, with an 8 minute service to each terminus).
Is the line not that busy? I was under the impression that it was quite busy.

Exactly what it says on the tin! - they are used before the first public train of the day, and sometimes after the last public train of the day, to transport drivers [and station staff] to their book on/off point when no other means of transport exist. These trains are covered by night drivers.

As far as I'm aware, they only run on the East London Line and the very northern tip of the Met (Rickmansworth to Amersham area).

Is the line not that busy? I was under the impression that it was quite busy. Only 35000 people a day use it. To put that in context that is the same amount of people who use Vauxhall Station.

Any time that I have been on it, (twice!!) the trains have been nearly empty!

The Northern Line has staff trains - I think purely for station staff purposes. One from Golders Green - Edgware NB early morning (I think thats weekdays), and one East Finchley - Mill Hill East (all days I think), one early NB trip and one late SB trip. This is all from memory so I could be mistaken about the specifics but they definitely do exist on the Northern Line

The Vic also has staff trains throughout the day between Seven Sisters and Nortumberland Park Depot.

An interesting list I think: the number of passengers divided by the number of stations: (line - journeys in millions - stations - journeys / stations)
Victoria 161 16 10.1 million W & City 10 2 4.8 million Jubilee 128 27 4.7 million Northern 207 50 4.1 million Bakerloo 96 25 3.8 million Central 184 49 3.7 million Piccadilly 176 52 3.4 million District 173 60 2.9 million Circle 68 27 2.5 million H & City 46 28 1.6 million Metropolitan 54 34 1.6 million East London 10 8 1.3 million

There were always staff trains or buses in LT days. I remember the Picc used to do a couple to West Ken in the mornings (a hangover from the days when the Picc stabled at Lillie Bridge) and the District used to run an early morning train to Aldgate East.

I think we have gone a tad off-topic of this thread re: staff trains, but here goes...
I recollect from Loughton on the Central in the mid-late 1950's there were BR through workings that were described to the public as effectively "Staff Trains". These were typically 0300 and 0400 hrs workings to probably the Stratford interchange, forward?
I'm interested that since the "breakup" of London Transport busses and trains, taxis have been commonly provided for out-of-hours staff workings? Specifically because the central co-ordination of buses and trains disappeared on devolution?
Is this just boring, or might it warrant someone starting a more specialist information thread?
:-)
Cheers,
