while they are bogging off to sctoland the intention IS to return them to london for the ELLX, or zat is what i've heard from porterbrook who own the units! I would class that as dubious if they are replacing another stock in Glasgow and are being AC'd. There's plenty of other stock that could fit the position! First seem to be taking a real interest in these now, seeing as they desperately want rid of their 314s rather than having to send them for a refurb and overhaul.

they are already AC ready, they just need a panto!
the 458s are only a temporary solution to the Glasgow Problem... they are built to a Southern Loading Guage not a scottish one, and thereof are a wee bit to tall and wide...
if i had the money i'd bet a tenner they were comn back to LU in 2011...

they are already AC ready, they just need a panto! They may well have AC motors, but they are designed to run off DC current, meaning that it isnt just a case of adding a panto, they probably need to allow the trains to change between DC pickup and AC pickup. On a similar note, the newer LUL stock has AC motors, but uses DC pickup. if i had the money i'd bet a tenner they were comn back to LU in 2011... Yeah but it wont be LU then, it will most probably be National Rail.

What are you on about jn114? The 458s and 334s are exactly the same height at 3.77 m (12 feet 3 inches) and width 2.8 m. There are minor differences in coach length but no longer than 30 centimeters, which will not make any difference! There are only minor differences in weight also, again nothing restricting. The gauge is your standard 4 ft 8½ inch rail... so I don't see what you are saying about them not being gauged ready to fit "scottish" lines. They are exactly the same trains, bar a few technical differences with electrical gear, with the exact same bodyshells, with slight modifications on the cab ends. Why won't they work then? You are right though, they are already fitted ready to work off AC overhead, once a pantograph has been fitted. As for returning by 2011, I doubt it and would put a tenner on saying they will not return and these will be a long term solution for 314 replacement. Considering there is plenty of other suitable stock available to work the ELLx when it eventually is ready for service!

So what will happen to the 314's?

Probably nothing beyond Glasgow! No-one would want such a unit now, they are getting old, by modern standards!
In short scrapped, though there may be a remote chance of some displacement. Can't see it myself.

by your data 458s are 75mm wider (width 2.875m) than the 334s and 35mm taller (height 3.805m)
Data sourced from the engineers handbook on these things!

I can't see 3.5 cm making much of a difference, nor 75 cm in width distributed either side if that is the case. I shall investigate further as it may a case that 334 data I received is simplified to it's simplest form, as with the 458 data I have. I do not see the difference in them and the restrictions they would carry. If they were out of guage they wouldn't be allowed to go to Glasgow at all!

Just because rumours have gone round before that they may go there, doesnt mean to say that that is what is going to happen. If they are going to the bother of fitting pantos to the units and sending them that far north, iam sure that isnt permanent, and if so, what would replace the turns they will cover when they come back south?? I think its a simple case of rumours being taken literally As in regards to measurements, give or take a few cms, they are the same body shell, all that is different is the cab, and the design on its "nose". If you go deeper than that, you could ofcourse say that the bolts and screws are different colours, but that would just be pedantic!!

Listen please both DT and jn114. I shall say this quietly:
NO Personal Comments Please.
Information is true or not. Dimensions can be checked from various sources. Opinions without facts are just that. Query the facts by all means, but do not slag off the poster. We've had enough wars recently thank you....
