Saw a box on the end of Earls Court station (not sure which platform) today marked 'emergency gas jumpers'. Whats that all about?

Not about gas for a start, they are Emergency Gap Jumpers.
These are long cables that are used to move a train that has been gapped, i.e. it does not have power from the current rails.
Only qualified staff can use the jumpers, one end of the cables are put on the current rails, the other end plugs into the train.

coulda sworn they said gas...but it was from a passing train...oops! do they appear all over the network, or is it something particular about earls court that requires them to be kept there?
are they plugged into the same place on the train as the shed leads (or whatever the official term is for those, i forget)?

You usually find them in locations where trains becoming gapped is a 'regular' occurance. I use the word 'regular' loosely - a train becoming gapped is hardly an everyday occurance!
The leads do indeed plug into the shed leads socket.
