For the second time in less than 6 months,Tubelines are having to repair cabling in the signalling kiosks around SMD due to damage by mice/rats.We did have some wild cats hanging around the depot and this problem has only arisen since someone in their wisdom had them removed.

Stations used to keep cats. There was even a semi-official allowance for cat food. Uxbridge used to have a particularly fat and lazy one. But they were useful in keeping down the vermin.

You're welcome to have ours!! It might be well-used (It's about 15 yrs old) but is still quite sprightly and will keep bringing its 'offerings' indoors. Usually a bird, dead. Often a mouse, headless, but sometimes a 'live'un' which disappears under the clock!! Then cat goes off to have a kip and we have to watch for it to come out. Even if cat wakes up, it won't always go after mouse even if it does reappear.

When did such a practice become discontinued? Dare I ask why too?

and will keep bringing its 'offerings' indoors. That's the trouble with cat's, they think they're giving you a present - so it's meant to taken as a compliment when they bring something to you.......my mate's cat often did it, until he managed to convince the said cat that such presents weren't actually wanted ;D ;D ;D

Next door's cat used to bring gifts-he wasn't even ours!! Not sure they were always gift. My girlsfriend dropped her bag on him once (by mistake) so he left something's insides all over her car!

Domestic cats think of their domestic staff [1] as mothers and themselves as kittens, and think they are doing their bit for the food supply by catching some. Also, sometimes they just seem to want congratulating.
[1] Cats are not owned, they keep staff.

That's the trouble with cat's, they think they're giving you a present - so it's meant to taken as a compliment when they bring something to you It is not a present, it is a report. After all, cats cannot write, so they are unable to inform you about their achievements in writing.
