I've been watching the driver's-eye-view DVD of the Northern. I have a question about the crossover at Moorgate. The DVD follows the train southbound via the City, and just before we reach Moorgate the tunnel wall opens up to the right where, as marked on numerous of my maps, I can see there should be a crossover. However, I am either utterly dim or seeing things [1], as I can't actually see any track coming in from the right! I can see the points, but no track. Why? A quick phone call to MRFS42 suggests that maybe the track had actually been taken up at the time of the DVD for renewing. Could that be the case? [1] highly likely, as I've been guzzling vodka & cloudy lemonade

Yep - I got the crossover when there was a short-notice closure at Kennington. Trains were going 'round at Moorgate and CX.

As I suggested in the phone call wasn't the crossover lifted and relaid preparatory to the reversing during TTN [1] 1/99 - "New Tube Approaching" Engineering Work between Moorgate and Kennington?
It all depends when the DVD [2] was filmed, I suppose.
[1] Timetable Notice
EDIT: second (and subsequent third) footnote added as I'd spotted another unexplained abbreviation:-
[2] Digital Video [3] Disc. ;D
[3] though some may contend 'Versatile'.

The crossover is definitely still there and operational, although we don't use it very much. Charing Cross gets used a bit more than Moorgate. But there are circumstances where Moorgate comes in handy......in fact <scratches head> I used it a few weeks ago when we had one-under at Leicester Square south, diverted some Kennington loop trains to reverse south to north at Moorgate (other loopers reversed via Kennington siding and Stockwell, to maintain a service on the north Cross).

What are the reversing facilities at Charing Cross like?

What are the reversing facilities at Charing Cross like? Charing Cross and Moorgate are basically the same layout i.e. an emergency crossover to the north of the platform - so a train can go north from the southbound platform, or shunt north, change ends, come back over the crossover and go south. The reason Charing Cross gets used a bit more is because of the Kennington loop trains - it's a good place to turn a looper which is 20-ish late (depending on how much time it has round the loop) and send it north on time. Moorgate normally only gets used in times of severe calamity.

I remember Moorgate being used the other week when there was a signal failure at Kennington and i think some other incident at the same time.
there was a train every 20 mins to Moorgate from the Edgware Branch

Have seen Mornington Crescent used during disruptions too. Is it policy to detrain these at Camden Town and then run empty to Mornington?
Speaking of Moorgate, there used to be a crossover at London Bridge, but that was removed when they diverted the southbound line to the new platform before the JLE opened.
In fact, on the Northern, I think I've seen all the reversing points used, except for Totteridge.
