I understand that some of the last freight workings on the Barnet branch were operated by diesel locomotives, rather than steam. They were introduced in 1960, and were used exclusively from 5 March 1961 (except when they broke down) until freight services were withdrawn in 1962.
Can anyone point me at a photograph of a diesel-hauled freight train on the branch, or supply one from their collection? Feel free to send a PM if you can't post an image here. It's for a forthcoming publication, so I need high quality if possible...
Thanks!

Sadly I have no pictures, but what you say is factually correct, yes. That book sounds interesting!

There should just be a photo or two in the LURS collection. I seem to recall there's a photo of a BTH Type 1 later Class 15 in UndergrounD, say issue 3?
I have seen an excellent photo of a BTH in the freight sidings next to Highgate Wood Depot, circa 1962. They were based at Hornsey and Stratford, and had tripcocks fitted as can be imagined. I assume that the steam locos were N7s?

I like the terminology "Barnet Branch". Are we going back to when the line to Edgware was the main line? No; I'd refer to the Edgware branch as well. I see them equally, but couldn't think of a more succinct way of describing that section. I certainly wasn't demeaning the Barnet branch!

I consider the branch to Barnet as starting at Camden Town now.

13th November 1962....horrible winter that....D8242 shunting on afreight working at Mill Hill East when only the freight yards at MHE and Edgware were still open, until early 1964. I see that there was an RCTS tour with a N2 65904 on 21st 1959..then there was a 6-car DMU that ran to Edgware on 1st October 1960 then on my wife's birth day, 2nd September 1961 (a hot Saturday said my late mother in law) N2 69568 reached High Barnet with an LCGB tour. According to my copy of UNDERGROUND issue 9 that I edited, freights to High Barnet ran until 1st October 1962.
I have a photo of N2 69540 at High Barnet with a Southend excursion train but no diesels.

Glad I found it! I have also seen one as I said of a BTH at Wellington Sidings, Highgate.
I assume that the DMU (2 x 3 cars?) had tripcocks fitted. A further assumption was that tripcocks were fitted to the units used on the Central Line, based....at Stratford?

The Cravens sets used on off-peak Moorgate - GN suburban workings were tripcock fitted. Some Brush Type 2s (Class 31) were tripcock fitted, as were Baby Deltics (Class 23), though the latter were soon banned from Moorgate due to noise and exhaust issues. I suppose that raises the question of whether either of those classes ever went onto the Edgware or Barnet lines.

Of course..forgot about the LMS and ER DMUs used on the Widened Lines! I remember the 31s...they and Classes 33 and 73 are the only diesel locos allowed on the WL now.

Many thanks for all your help - and especially to Oracle for the photo. I've passed it on to the publishers who will have a chat with John Gillham.

You might like to ask LURS (London Underground Railway Society) Library if they have any more.
