Why aren't station staff allowed to carry luggage for passengers?
I know they are not paid to do it, but every time they are asked they say they can't, so I persume its something to do with Health & Safety?

Carrying luggage is up to the individual staff member. I [most of the time] only carry luggage for the elderly and/or disabled. I used to [in rare cases I used to when on the barrier] carried pushchairs. I have found most staff will help, within reason of course, we dont want to damage our backs.
We are NOT obliged to carry luggage. Again its down to personal choice. I remember mothers refusing to take their baby out of the pushchair and INSISTING I carry one end of the pushchair [they the other] down an escalator. A small amount of common sense will see why this is a bad idea, but many fail to see this. An incident on the Northern years ago just like this resulted in a baby, tragically, being killed.
There are of course many incidents where people have luggage which is not very heavy, and DEMAND help!!!!! People carry excessive amounts of luggage on the tube, and EXPECT staff to carry it. We are NOT porters!

Also many 'outlying' stations do not have staff available to assist like the central London stations do - therefore, (coupled with the reasons tubeboy has stated) customers are expected to be able to carry their own luggage at all times unlike the wally that turned up at Earls Court once expecting me to help carry a washing machine .

LOL - Wahing Machine ;D I think I seem to be unlucky then, as whenever I'm at a station, and a elderly person wants help with their bags, the staff always seem to say no, and of course, apart from ignoring them, which is rude IMO, I don't have any other way to get out of it! See, even someone not eligable for the job yet, is proving his customer service skills! ;D

I kid you not - when he realised it wouldn't through the manual gate he re-considered his masterplan and said he was going to use a taxi. I'd love to have seen the cabbies reaction......

Joking aside, I see the guy's point (not about expecting staff to help, mind you). Now, I'm not saying that I would carry a washing machine on the tube (or anywhere else for that matter, as I'm a lazy g*t). But the "offficial" line is to try to get people to give up their cars. I can only presume that this customer did not have a car, or he would have used it. He probably didn't have a drivers license either, or he would have rented a suitable vehicle as I have done when I was giving "life without a car" a try (the concept didn't work very well by the way). It probably did not occur to him that it would be so difficult getting it through the gates (and down and up escalators no doubt) and taxis in this city are horribly expensive. He may have been new to the city and not realised that phoning a minicab is cheaper than getting a black cab. In any event, I hope he managed to get a taxi to take him, or he will be working hard on getting his car by now... Or paying for delivery next time.

I remember a story about a guard who saw someone trying to get a pony onto a 158! "Now you're taking the pi$$, mate..." ;D ;D

They used to have Porters, called Station Ambassadors at Euston and Victoria mainline stations, for a charge of £3, they would load your luggage onto a trolley and/or carry it to the taxi/tube/bus stop....

Well, if it was me, I'd actually give them a small tip for thier trouble, irrespective of their contry of origin... Poland is a very nice country, great food, great people, even if you only know how to say hello in Polish, its a great boom, and I've personally found people to be very surprised at the attempt I made to speak the lingo... I can't speak it fluently, but what little I know, helps, especially for those that come to find work here.

In fact I think the are employed by the bus operator

The influx of East Europeans is caused by the wage differential... a typical job in Poland, say a Cleaner at a hospital would only pay 600 zl [local currency is the Zloty [say it as Shallotee] [about £100] a month, where as working here, they can earn £800 [5,000 zl] a month... someone from Poland I know, abandoned his home, car, etc to come and live here... He's teachine me Polish [I'm learning as best as I can] and I'm teaching him the intricacy of the English lauguage]. The first words he learnt, not from me I might add, were rather, err... to the point... Still, it's all good fun learning another language....
If you ever go to Poland, you just have to try the national dish, called Bigos [say as Bee-goss] Bacon or beef, wrapped in Cabbage, and boiled in a nice rich vegetable stew... And not forgetting a shot of Vodka [neat]

lol lets not stray off the point here. i was just saying about people being to lazy, think about it if you cant carry your own stuff youshouldnt bring it, especially middle aged and young people. oaps you can understand, but somepeople think because they pay thier taxes we have to tend to thier needs but really its a circle because we pay taxes too so they should respect us, i kno its not quite the same but i work in a shop and we get customers do exactly the same, like one time we had a customer and she was quite old like late 50's and my manager dropped a product she brought to her house as it was rather hefty, then the next day she came in and wanted to buy a mop and asked if the manager could drop it off for her, next shell want him to drop off a bar of chocolate, onece u do it once they expec\t it again and again

If you see the bag I carry around with me, you'd probably ask why do I need that?
Usual contents of work bag flask, sandwiches in plastic container, notebook, defect guidelines book, duty sheets, Traffic Circulars [some dating back months that have managed to avoid the weekly emptying regime] handlamp, spare bulbs for handlamp, boot cleaning kit, deodorant, change for the sweetie machine at West Rui or Broadway [!], err, jacket, casual fleece/pullover/shirt, sunglasses, [plus case], camera, phone, chargers for these, letters, vouchers for shopping trips, Travel Guides/maps for tourists... The whole lot must weigh like 15-20kg... and I heave that about on my shoulder most of the day... A non-work bag is much the same, leaving out the lamp and handbooks....
And apologies for straying off the thread path....

There was someone in the shoe-shop where I work who last week wanted a different pair of the shoes from the stockroom because the shop-floor pair "had a mark on the sole".
Why do those people need so much for a weekend? My one-night stay in Belfast didn't even fill a small rucksack!

Marked sole??? Gawd, soon as this person puts them on, they'd be marked anyway....
Once waited for ages at theydon west for a family going on holiday to load on around 11 suitcases. Besides the load one, have a kiss, load another, say goodbye, load another, hug and kiss [again], theres me at the front, looking out the door waiting. Soon as I got out and stood on the platform with hands on hips, they soon hurried along then.... At Liverpool Street, I waited for then to offload... I honestly felt like asking them which one the kitchen sink was in.... don't think that would have gone down well tho....

Then there are the people who try to return a shoe that has very obviously been worn for ages, is an old design, and wasn't even sold in one of the factory outlets; nor do they have a receipt. On yer bike!
Someone in Belfast airport had a suitcase that was almost certainly too heavy for a normal person to carry. Someone joked that it was a taxi, and tried to hail it.

Until the current airport security scare most frequent fliers insisted on packing everything for a weekend and maybe even a week into a single carry on bag, the reason being that they can then avoid waiting for their bag to make an appearance on the carousel and the somewhat likely possability of their bag ending up in the wrong country.
I've ended up buying a jacket with an almost silly number of pockets to avoid taking a bag from home to work and then back again every day. I can supposedly carry a laptop in one pocket if I really want to, but that would make sitting down an expensive gamble.

Often on packed FGW 125s the conductor (or whatever their title is today) will make an anouncement asking people to move their bags of seats etc, but I can't think of a time when I've seen it asked in person. The stupid thing is that very often when people are standing in the isle in the centre of the train, there are seats to spare at the country end, and despite anouncements people don't move.

well listen to this ive never seen something so unbelievable in my life, i get on the train , get off at hatton cross, well you know there are porters thier and they came down the stairs ask if any one needs help so several people ask, next thing this middle aged woman stops ain the middle of the platform puts her suitcast down , bearing in mind she has just wheeled it for all of 1 min, so she puts it down and then clicks her fingers at the porter, i was so angry at this, i mean who does she think she is treating people like this. if i was that porter i would have turned round and told her where to shove it. its not like she was anyone special

if that was me, I would have just sauntered over, slowly, and then as she marched off to where ever, I'd have followed along at my own pace... when she wasn't looking, 'accidentally' drop/bash/knock/kick the case....

well, speaking of selfish travellers, today on my way to work, well when i was getting off at my stop about 20 people were also getting off, as usual as it is one of he busiest stops on the route, well the stop was packed with people o get on the bus,
so as people are trying to get off the bus driver opens the front and starts letting people on and a group of old ladys rush on stop people from getting off just so they can get seats. ive never seen them rush so fast, meanwhile with several people still trying to get off including myself the drivers nearly closes the doors, i just dont understand why people cant wait, those women would have got a seat anyway as they were at the front of the queue.
