When the victoria line is in manual mode is the train driven in the same manner as a conventional underground line? Well....AFAIK (and bear in mind I've never driven on the Vic) it's a bit different. First of all, rather than having a "deadman" there is a separate vigilance button which the T/Op has to keep depressed at all times. Secondly, in the absence of tripcocks there are 2 different manual modes - coded and slow. Coded manual is driving manually at a reduced speed but still protected by track codes (so the train will be stopped it it has a SPAD), in CM the train will do a bit over 20mph. CM is also used for driving to/from sidings. Slow manual is used where there are no codes, either because of driving in depot or because of a track or train fault. In slow manual the train will do 5-10mph, and there is nothing to stop the train if it has a SPAD. HTH tfc

Thus if there is a "signal" failure on the Victoria Line with no codes, it is common to see a train running along the affected stretch at about 5mph in restricted manual. This obviously cripples the service, but is the safest way of operating a lack of ATP.

This obviously cripples the service, but is the safest way of operating a lack of ATP. And if there is a train-borne equipment failure leaving a train which can't pick up codes, you have a train which can only do 5-10mph. This will rapidly annihilate the Victoria line so such a train would normally be disposed of in the nearest available siding to be moved to depot after the last train. Unless someone can go to the siding in the meantime and fix it.
