Sounds like the latching mechanism on the MA contactor was faulty.In the days before PEA's if the batteries went flat you could put a control key in the rear cab and get a back feed,got me out of the brown stuff once on the Victoria Line. This sounds like an interesting topic, similar to the essay in Underground News about the 1972TS in Colindale siding that came unstuck and derailed due to leaking air feeds, which were originally designed for ATO operation (with the interesting side effect that in manual mode, they prevented a back trip!)
