When trains leave Northumberland Park depot, where do they go into ATO? Is it at the depot outlet signal?
Thanks,
David

In the depot: slow manual.
From the depot outlets to Seven Sisters platforms five and four: coded manual.
From NPD, trains mostly arrive at Seven Sisters platform five. Once fully berthed at the starter signal, the driver changes to auto. Some early morning trains go into platform four to form Walthamstow services. In this case the driver shuts down, changes ends, opens up in auto and waits for the correct route.

On the Auto Tube Rambler of 1980 the driver deliberately drove the 8-car train out of the depot in auto, and demonstrated what would happen if this was done accidentally. We were however warned over the PA about the sudden stopping that would occur.

We were however warned over the PA about the sudden stopping that would occur. I can imagine the hell there would be to pay if such "antics" were engaged in in todays Health and Saftey concious environment ! Suffice to say, it's the absence of graduated braking that is the problem. If the train is set to ATO mode in an area which is not wired for ATO such as the Depot, the train will not find a saftey code and the Auto box will immediately apply the emergency brake. If ATO is selected where there are saftey codes (eg. from the snow cover (depot outlet) to Seven Sisters platform) but the section is not designated for ATO running, the train will hold the speed it was doing when ATO was selected. There are not however any brake spot commands to be recived by the train and in consequence it will not slow down for red signals, in the event of the train running past a red signal, it will then loose the saftey code, in fact it picks up a 120mhz code which it does not recognise and the Auto box then applies the emergency brake. It should be noted however I'm just indicating what would happen and that the system remails fail safe however ATO would not be selected by trains running from N Pk Depot to Seven Sisters.

The auto box only gives the code visuals,it's the safety box that energises or de-energises the code trip valve.
