I think this is one of those things that will be lost in the mists of time, similar to why the Victoria Line codes run VP - VE. I've been thinking about this, and after consulting the route planning map on page 11 of "The Victoria Line" by Mike Horne (ISBN 1 85414 281-X): Norbury (Route 8/C, Scheme D) - VD East Croydon (Route 8/C) - VC South Croydon (Scheme D) - VC The twin termini of Scheme D, Coulsdon North and Sanderstand, might have both been VB, or one might have been VA, in violation of signalling principles. I wonder if this is the reason why the codes run as they do on the Vic.
