Lets hear it for the Watford - Queens Park section.
Today is the 90th anniversary of the electric service on the route -shame nothing formal was done but I live in hope for the 100th anniversary.
WOULDENT IT BE NICE TO SEE THE 38 STOCK BACK FOR A DAY ?

From the punters' viewpoint, given the quality and comfort of current tube stock, it would be nice to have the 38 stock back permanently.

And it would be nice to hear the wonderful sounds they apparently made! Line Breakers 'popping'... Oh, lovely sound that must have been.

And it would be nice to hear the wonderful sounds they apparently made! Line Breakers 'popping'... Oh, lovely sound that must have been. The word 'apparently' suggests that you never actually heard this. I assure you that it was an amazing sound. For me however, it was not true perfection. That was something that was only achieved by the sound of a pre-38 Standard Stock compressor. One of the best ways to describe this is to ask you to imagine two very old British motorbikes ticking over at exactly the same speed but out of synchronisation with each other. It helps if you imagine that one of the bikes has a sore throat. Now slow the whole thing down. Music to the ears!

A taster of this distinctive sound can be found on 'Underground Trains Remembered', an Online VHS. On this tape, a 'standard stock' unit can be heard with compressors running under the roof of Ryde Pier Head station.
