Talking about the 09ts being more spacious got me thinking. Why aren't there standing room only carriages I would of thought it would be a great idea, seeing as this would double, even triple the amount of passengers you could fit in one carriage!!

Lots of train equipment is kept under the seats

Oh yeh *remembers episode of The Tube where D Stock broke down* And I suppose even if it was encased, it would take up just as much room as seats?

My son has a diseased hip and has had a major operation. He needs to sit down on the LUL trains. I used to commute Hounslow West to Holborn and then Piccadilly Circus for 8 1/2 years and I can tell you I needed my seats!

Certainly there are trains where seats have been removed to allow more standing passengers, Mainline that is. The 2009 stock seems to allow a fair amount of space for standing [essential on the Victoria line]

I think standing only carriages are a bit extreme, but the new Victoria stock will help a lot with the elimination of transverse seats that exist now in the 67 DMs along with the wider aisle (two people can easily stand side by side rather than 1 person as in most tube trains).

The Yamanote Line in Japan has some cars devoid of seats in the rush hours (and 6 sets of doors per side!). However, they don't have problems with underfloor equipment protruding into the passenger saloon as with tube profile stock, and some of the other cars in the train do have seats.

If standing room only cars were ever introduced on the tube/SSL (if somehow the impracticalities were overcome) I for one would not pay any sort of fare.

Somethings going to have to happen eventually though. When they are running as many trains as possible, and there still isn't enough space, what more can you do?

was wondering why they fit heaters to the vic line stock Because the depot is above ground and they have to be kept warm overnight.
