Before you say anything, this is not a moan about why there is no air-con on the tube, I do know why... But I would like to know how it is possible to get air-con in the cab. I'm persuming its like a car and doesn't require any extra fittings, as such?

All it is, is a small refrigerator in reverse. Electric supply is all that's needed, or even just belt drive off an axle/wheelset. Could be fitted as a completely self-contained unit in any cab.

As the heat output from a cab unit is minimal, we can fit them to cabs without worrying about tunnel temperatures. If you think about the 09ts, there will be 48 trains so that's 96 units in total that could be working at any one time. If we had a unit on each car, well thats the 96 cab units plus another 384 (someone check my math!) units. Hot, hot, hot!

So its more like a cooler, not air con?
I imagine the answer to this will be "because of space", but why not have these throughout the train then? How big are these things?

It's a cooler on 67ts but proper air con where fitted on other stock. The 67 peltier units would be ineffective in the passenger saloon as the doors open every 2 minutes. The air con on other stock takes around 70% external air and 30% recycled from the cab. It's not really a space issue.

So they would effectively be heating up, instead of cooling down, because of the doors opening?

No, it's simply that any cooling effect would be exhausted to atmosphere when the doors opened, so they would be working flat out and never getting the chance to make a difference. The answer (going slightly off topic here, forgive me!) is tunnel cooling rather than train cooling, utilising the ground water in and around the existing infrastructure. The project is working on this and has a trial system in place at Victoria. I'm told it's very effective.

I s'pose that makes sense, seeing that the tube trains are so small. On the SSLs that shouldn't be so much of a problem, I have been told.

My above comments where regarding the Peltier units not being able to cope with the Vic lines rapid service. You are right though, for one reason and another this will not pose a problem on the SSR.

The few times I worked on C stock with 6513 in the formation, which was temporarily fitted with passenger air-cooling, it did seem very good while the doors remained closed! As soon as they opened, the warm air rushed in and the cooling equipment raced into life.

I'm no air con expert, but I suspect that this was because the car was not designed for air con. 'S' has been an air conditioned train before it was on the drawing board and so should fare better.

The trains need "air curtains" I think they're called. I think they blow air down to form a curtain, so the cold air (or hot) don't leak out. Anyone know more than me? I think if these were installed, in say, a refurb D Stock (they can stick a unit in, cuz they're refurbing them) with aircon, I think it could work.
Have YOUR Say.
EDIT: Oh, if they do what I just said, the openable windows will have to go.
