New destination information equipment is being installed
in Picc train cabs and a notice has gone up at Arnos
Grove announcing special duties for DVA testing. DVA I
assume stands for Digitised Voice Announcements so it
seems the automatic on board announcements might be
about to become live . It is some 10 years since the stock
was refurbed and it seems odd that they have chosen
now to make it work. Incidentally our `Sonia' is an Arnos
based T/OP who I hope negotiated repeat fees into his
contact.

Hmm...by 'his' I assume you mean the Piccadilly Sonia will be male. Not a good idea I would've thought, the deeper male voice would surely be harder to hear in tunnel over the standard female voice?

Will this simply be an addon to the current system, or is there a totally new one with the Emma Clarke voice?

It has been planned to add auto announcements on the Picc for some time.

I have noticed some STN paths for trails of the DVA in the last month also.

STN = Special Train Notice, its a scheduled path that is published to allow a train to transfer or run around the network, during traffic hours. Its usually used to provide paths for engineer trains to transfer during the day if the engineers would rather run a train through the day at night. Regular STNs are also published for the track recorder train, weed killer train, and other regular moves - the STN will list the actual path offered, and a list of timetable alterations to services to provide that path. The STN I was referring to, offered a few paths for an empty Picc train to run the whole length of the Picc line empty, on a weekend, to test the DVA.

I think the train announcements should come from Kryten of Red Dwarf. You would then know exactly how much credibility they have....

However, if the numbers pressed are (for example) 32 or 33 - a mistake can be easily made

Arnos Grove is 05, Northfields is 35, so it could be a case of "fat finger syndrome".

off-topic as its NR not LU, but possibly of interest.
I was on a new Class 350 from Brum New St to Liverpool Lime St, but the auto-anouncer thought it was on a service from Liverpool to Birmingham. It named the stations correctly, but assumed that it was going in the opposite direction, so at the first station we got the destination as Birmingham New Street calling at Birmingham New Street only. Then we were calling at Sandwell and Dudley and Birmingham New Street, etc.
It confused most people on board, and at least one person hurried off the train after hearing the announcement and thinking they were on the wrong train. On LU there would be another train in a couple of minutes, I think the next train would have been in about 20 minutes time to Liverpool, but that might have a different stopping pattern.
Nobody came along to check tickets or try and sell us refreshments and by the time I got to the front of the train at the end of the journey (I was sitting near the back) the driver wasn't in evidence so there was nobody to tell.

Apparently the 350s have a very high mpc figure. [miles per casualty] The silverlink ones are 58,120, while the central trains ones are 9,000. This is due to central working their units a lot harder, and they also do more stopping services.

i think they should ban these dva's on national rail , especially on long journeys, ok to have a visual display but there is nothing worse when you are trying to grab a short nap and some silly cow is interupting your slumber with useless information that you already know , First great western have a quiet car on their adalantes but no dva, does any other stock on other lines that has uses dva have a quiet car ??
on gner the train manager announces when the train is approaching the next station which in my opinion is quite sufficient

In my opinion, the most annoying of the NR announcers are those with verbal diarrhea who spend six minutes after each stop explaining the catering arrangements to me. If there is a buffet car as part of the train, I think that the majority of passengers will be able to work out how to use it; whereas the really intelligent ones will probably have made their own catering arrangements before boarding.

Last time I travelled on GNER a disembodied voice kept screaming about the disabled passenger alarm being activated.
This went on for a good twenty minutes, so I would imagine it was some chavs setting it off for fun rather than a person in genuine distress, who I assume the staff would have located on the first occasion.

I think the Disabled Alarm and Unlock Door buttons are right next to each other on 225s - hence people tend to confuse them...

It is annoying, especially when you are in Quiet Class Coach A/B? I had that from Retford-Hertford North, so annoying though!
