Although it's needed, the new DVA announcement for King's Cross St Pancras is a bit ridiculous. "This is a Circle Line train via Liverpool Street. Change here for the Metropolitan, Northern, Picadilly and Victoria lines, Suburban and National rail, the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, the Moon, my friend Gareth's house, and International rail services." Or something like that, anyway. ;D It is a bit... long .

I know what you mean, but if you were very visually impaired / had no eyesight at all, and you didn't know the Tube system at all, I think I'd be quite grateful for it.. Bit like the Circle line one at Tower Hill

I agree, but I think that DVA announcements are only likely to get longer though - The Rail Vehicle Accessibility Regulations (RVAR), which will apply to 09 and S Stock, are fairly prescriptive in the type and frequency of announcements required. This is good for visually impaired people and is therefore justified as a component of making the Tube "accessible for all". However, it will probably seem a bit much at 5.30 in the morning when you're trying to get a bit of extra shut-eye on the way into work! ttr

Aren't they frequent enough?
I think most people would prefer it if they spent more money providing a better service than recording long announcements. Surely the station name is enough? If you're going to the Hanging Gardens of Babylon and didn't look up which station to get to in the first place, your fault.

If you're going to the Hanging Gardens of Babylon and didn't look up which station to get to in the first place, your fault. Automatic announcements are becoming more frequent and more detailed everywhere - trains, lifts, airports etc. This is mainly due to Disability Discrimination Act from which RVAR is derived. The basic tenet is that people with disabilities should be allowed to access (within reason) the same things as those who aren't disabled. Therefore, any visually impaired passengers (VIP's) require audio announcements to the same level as the information provided on the line diagrams within the cars. I'm afraid they are here to stay - although I do agree from a personal POV that they can get annoying. More info on RVAR can be found here >> www.dft.gov.uk/transportforyou/access/rail/vehicles/pubs/rva/rvareg1998/accessibilityregulations19986140?page=2

Bit like some of the Pre-privatised rail network station announcements... I shall give a rendition of one, frequently heard announced both on train and on the station.
This is Sevenoaks. Platform 4 for the Thameslink service to Bedford, calling at Bat & Ball, Otford, Shoreham, Eynsford, Swanley, St MAry Cray, Bickley, Bromley South, Shortlands, Ravensbourne, Beckenham Hill, Bellingham, Catford, Crofton Park, Nunhead, Peckham Rye, Denmark Hill, Elephant & Castle, London Blackfriars, City Thameslink, Farringdon, Kings Cross Thameslink, Mill Hill Broadway, Elstree, Radlett, St Albans, Harpenden, Luton, Leagrave, Harlington, Flitwick and Bedford... Change at XXX for ZZZ, change at YYY for BBB, change at KKK for TTT... it took about four minutes for the station version to play in full and by the time it had ran its course, you'd have forgotten its 11th calling point or the train had departed!

If we're talking long announcements, I remember one from Weymouth a couple of years back:
The train now standing at platform two is the 22:35 South West Trains service to London Waterloo. Calling at Upwey, Dorchester South, Moreton, Wool, Wareham, Hamworthy, Poole, Parkstone, Branksome, Bournemouth, Pokesdown, Christchurch, Hinton Admiral, New Milton, Sway, Brockenhurst, Ashurst New Forest, Totton, Redbridge, Millbrook, Southampton Central, St. Denys, Swaythling, Southampton Airport Parkway, Eastleigh, Shawford, Winchester, Micheldever, Basingstoke, Hook, Winchfield, Fleet, Farnborough, Brookwood, Woking, West Byfleet, Weybridge, Walton-on-Thames, Surbiton, Wimbledon, Clapham Junction and London Waterloo.
All stations to West Byfleet except for Holton Heath and Beaulieu Road!

There's a new one on the Bakerloo to tell people about London Overground and Eurostars no longer serving Waterloo. They've decided to add on a few extras from before to tell people to get off at Regents Park for "ZSL London Zoo" and the "National Gallery and National Portrait Gallery" at Charing Cross. Interestingly, the word "alight" has been replaced by "exit" in all cases.

All stations to West Byfleet except for Holton Heath and Beaulieu Road! Couldn't they say exactly that ? I'm sure there is the potential (even if not commonly used) for different routings for journeys between Weymouth and Waterloo, so its not quite that simple...

I suppose they would have done if it was a manual PA announcement, but 'Automatic Phil' can't do those shortened versions!

They mention St Pancras International at KCSP, and have changed alight for exit. Does it actually say something along the lines of "Waterloo is not served by Eurostar anymore" or have they just completely taken it all away as if it were never there before? I think this what they should do for the East London Line - instead of mentioning rail replacement services as if the past is gonna linger with us

The Northern and Jubilee's has been altered as well, Waterloo Northern and Jubilee and KCSP for the Northern.
On the subject of ridiculous and annoying dva's. AVOID FINCHLEY ROAD, SWISS COTTAGE AND ST JOHNS WOOD AT ALL TIMES!

I noticed yesterday that the C stock announcement at Earls Court has been changed from "alight here" to "exit here" - it's noticeably a patch in the recording because it's louder!

Yeah same with "National and INTERNATIONAL rail services" on the picc. How do they record all this onto it? Is it sort of like a PC as we know it, or is it just done by adding a memory stick to it's control panel?

I don't know how it's done - there's no obvious socket or connector on the unit in the cab, but then it's probably hidden away from drivers' prying fingers! The C stock refurb predates modern memory sticks, very much of the floppy disk era.

I might be totally wrong but I think it is under the seats somewhere! I do know that they are complicated to update and not really "drag and drop!"

"Royal Institute of the Blind" became "Royal National Institute for the Blind People". It is getting seriously long...but nowhere near as long as the District at Tower Hill, unless they shortened it in my year of absence!

My bad, indeed it has always been "Royal National institute of the blind" - it was so long I missed the national out by accident ...
