When I lived in the Capital, the only H&C trains beyond Whitechapel operated in the peaks M-F. But now during the peak every other H&C reverses at Plaistow. When did this begin, and do Districts ever reverse there(or have they?).

From the late 90's or maybe early noughties. Now and again Districts reverse there during severe service disruption, but usually only if the H & C is suspended past Whitechapel.Years ago it was mainly used to put defective stock away off the main line, things like severe flats or burst armatures.

When the H&C was run as part of the Met No.1 section there were regular reversers at Plaistow - it was going on in 1958 according to my lunchtime reading matter ;D I might be able to find a more accurate modern date (when C'cle/H&C TTs were published separately) when I root around in the WTT mountain at home.

Further to the previous post - it seems that within modern times 'in order to reduce the evening peak stock requirement by one train, alternate e/b H&C trains will reverse at Plaistow during the evening peak' was printed in the 'revisions incorporated' to WTT 11 coming into force on the 28/9/97; however between 1938 and 1952 Plaistow was added to the galleys for the District. As an answer the first timetabled (in modern times) regular reverse was seemingly train 230, 1459.5 off Hm, on Mon following the service introduction. ;D Does that help?

Correction: have dug further into the heap and Plaistow was added to the galley for District and Picc trains after 19/5/52 and before 12/6/61.
However in TT 84 (1961) it was only Met. trains that turned back at FC.
Hope that narrows down the parameters of your question.

Working Timetable 76 for 1957 shows two H&C trains terminating at Plaistow on weekdays- at 9.43am and 4.43 pm, returning Westbound a few minutes later.
The Bay Road was also used to stable one District train overnight at 8.01pm ,returning to service the following morning and on Saturday nights until Monday morning. Another District train stabled from 9.44am to 11.44am on Saturdays. ( The trains stabled in the Bay Platform may have been due to a shortage of space in Little Ilford and Barking sidings - this was before Upminster Depot and Upney sidings were brought into use.

From further digging in the WTT heap I can come up with an later exclusion date - that of 24/12/53. Plaistow doesn't appear on the galley for the Christmas train workings (although I'm only looking at a Timetable Notice: TTN: 181/53) so Plaistow might not be there just because no reverses were scheduled there over those 3 days. Could we narrow this down further? ;D

WTT 17 28th November 1938 has a similar overnight stabler - both on weekdays and Saturdays, (9.14am - 4.41pm weekdays, 1225pm Sats). But only when the trains were starting/entering service. There aren't any booked reverses during service until some point after Christmas 1953 - I think (just speed-read 4 District and Picc TTs, my eyes are hurting and head is feeeling rather full ) .
