I take the H&C pretty often and I've noticed on the WB sometimes that the t/ops gun the C-stock as fast as they could push it, which makes for an exciting trip through the short open sections of the tunnel as you could see the speed! At times it is full power all the way until just before the Thameslink station where there is some hard braking to what seems to be a slower speed restriction.
However, I can safely say that the C-stocks seems obviously above 35mph (which I assume is the absolute limit in SSL tunnels) for some time before the hard braking.
T/ops having some fun? ;D

I'm not meaning to discredit your post here, pacific .... but 1) It's been well documented that the human eye is very bad at judging speed 2) Why exactly would a T/op speed, when he could very easily lose his job over it, if he's caught??

Plus, the balancing speed of a C stock is apparently relatively low, making speeding quite difficult.

There was the one t/op who just gunned it non-stop through the 25 sign into the tunnel. All my other rides involved coasting some way into the tunnel before full power is applied. Other things include: 1) Motor pitch was very high and acceleration under full power was getting close to nonexistant - reminded me leaving Barking WB. 2) Beats me.

Can't say I know that section of track, but I can state with complete confidence that there is a sticker in the cab, next to the speedo, reminding drivers that the maximum authorised speed for C stocks is 40mph.

Having had experience of C stock myself, they struggle to get the wrong side of 40mph, and you have to remember 35mph on a C stock sounds fast coz of the motors making such a racket!

That is indeed a very fast section of track and I know some H & C and Circle drivers will attempt to get as much as they possibly can out of their stock over it, the bouncy track helps give a most entertaining ride. Is there a general 35mph limit in tunnels ? I can't say I'm aware of that, though I hadn't thought of it in that context .... i can't think of any SSL tunnel section where there is a higher speed limit ! As for trains exceeding the speed limit, of course it happens from time to time, drivers are human, however fear not, a tolerance exists between speed limit safety margins and drivers do not willfully put passenger safety at risk. Shall we also say that not all the train speedo's read that accurately and on some stocks they are not illuminated and thus can not be seen anyway ....and leave that one there

Personally, unless the drivers concerned were due for relief at Edgware Road, I think you're all making it up. Whoever heard of a Circle/H&C driver getting above 20mph let alone breaking the speed limit. Poppycock ;D Well someone had to say it, so i did

as soon as the circle and district get S stock, you guys can only make fun of the drivers, not the stock!

or in the very, very distant future (judging by Connect) ATO is installed, you could get rid of the H&C rant area!

I wonder if the indicated 70 mph or line speed at the time experienced on the D Stock Tour of 1980 NB to Amersham will remain unique?
