Just before the last meet I took a trip down to Wimbledon and onto the Croydon Tramlink. Very nice and those trams must have traction controls similar to the Jubilee stock considering their sound when accelerating. But I digress… Coming back on the District en route to Embankment – to pick up the Bakerloo. Two young fellas brought on a couple of bicycles at Southfields which surprised me as I didn’t think that they were permitted – I was wrong. They also could have stacked them better on board with more consideration to the rest of the travelling public – but that’s par for the course. I put myself to right on seeing this little gem from TfL … www.tfl.gov.uk/tfl/pdfdocs/tube-map-bicycles1b.pdf… showing where such velocipedes and their antisocial propulsion systems could be carried and it raises a question. What happens to a Northern Line train between Colindale and Hendon Central that stops bicycles being carried? I can understand that a lot of the other prohibited routes are due to stations and their access but this ban is between two permissive stations. P.S. I have to say that the map above looks like a cunning District Line plan!

No bicycles whatsoever [except foldable ones] can be conveyed from Hendon to Colindale. This is due to the line travelling through the Burroughs tunnels. Bicycles can not be conveyed through any deep level tunnel section. Sub surface lines can carry bicycles [outside the peaks] where the line is closer to the surface.

As a general rule of thumb, you can't take a bike in a tube tunnel. (unless it's a folding type). Colindale - Hendon has a tunnel between it.

I assume this has to do with evacuation - but I am struggling to see the case.

Yes if evacuation were being attempted and bikes were in the way and there was a fire............Bikes [naturally due to their size] are placed near the doors, so therefore blocking an escape route. It would be easy in the panic for someone to get their foot caught in the spokes, thereby stopping others from vacating the train. Also the bikes falling over. When telling people the above reasons as to why they cannot travel, they invariably look at me as though I am a jobsworth.

yet you can take as much luggage as you can carry (picc from h'row is a notable example of this) and unfolded pushchairs/prams and leave them in doorways apparently without being challenged by any staff? are there actually any regs about objects blocking doors/aisles?

Yeaes ago I was on a train and some young whippersnapper trainee in uniform complained to a passenger about blocking up the J door, and quoted regulation so-and-so.

Any rules about dogs travelling on the underground? I mean the furry four legged variety.

Any rules about dogs travelling on the underground? I mean the furry four legged variety. You would need to refer to TFLs Conditions of Carriage (which is offline at the moment). However I do believe its restricted to guide dogs and dogs you can easily carry only. I may of course be wrong

Dogs (and many other animals) are allowed. Most animals should be in a cage.....etc....etc....
Dogs, to be specific, must be carried through barriers and on escalators. They must be on a lead (and muzzled if neccessary).

Ok thanks pretty much what I was told about dogs on the buses.
And the Conditions of Carriage sounds like the CSA's bible.

Err, pardon? ;D
We do use it dear boy, but we dont want to sound officious [Jobsworths] eg telling a drunk that he is contravening the bye laws of lul. No, we say something along the lines of " Oi, yer not travelling you dirty pi$$head, get the f**k out of me station"!!! ;D
Oh yes we have to be diplomatic at all times!! ;D
