A story today in the New York Times newspaper (at www.nytimes.com/2007/09/10/nyregion/10atrain.html?ref=nyregion ) claims that the A line on the New York City subway is the longest subway line in the world at 31 miles. How long is the longest current run on the Met (presumably from Chesham to Aldgate) and how long were the longest runs in the old days of the Met with steam trains from Aylesbury, etc? One thing is sure, though. You can ride the length of the A line for $2.00 which is nothing compared to the cost for a single for the length on the Met.

According to Wikipedia and TfL the Met is 41.6 miles long. The Central is London's longest at 46 miles. TubePrune says the longest single journey on the tube is 34.1 miles between West Ruislip and Epping, Central Line.
Wikipedia gives the NYC A line service as "the longest one-seat ride in the subway system: over 31 miles"
Journeys to Aylesbury and Ongar would have been longer still.

My info says 66.7 km, but the line length is arguably from the NR/LT junction north of Amersham to Aldgate buffer stops. I assume that the SB would be longer than then NB?

Fares wise, Chesham to Aldgate is £7.00 cash or £5.50/£3.00 peak/off peak on Oyster. West Ruislip to Epping is £4.00/£3.50/£2.00
$2.00 is the equivalent of 98.5pence. The cheapest adult fare on LU is £3.00/£1.00 (cash/oyster) single in any one zone except Zone 1.

chesham-aldgate is just under 30 miles. If the met was extended to barking, then that would win, but only if Amersham, Chesham or maybe even Watford has a service there.
Bushey Heath (or Watford) to North Cheam (or whethever the Northern line was proposed to south of South Wimbledon), via Highgate and Bank would be a very long service (though it's unlikely that even if the track was there, that it would run that way)

From what I've seen of the NYC Subway, that $2 doesn't seem to be re-invested into the system, and I'm pretty sure its not as comfortable as the journey to Amersham on an A Stock! ;D

The A stocks are LU's most comfortable train in current passenger service, I expect a fairer comparison would be with the 92s which are LU's least comfortable current stock.

Plastic (NYC) or cardboard with 2cm thick cushioning (92ts)? Tough choice! ;D

Probably from "Uptown Downtown" by Stan Fischler. On the other hand, the flat fare is a bargain, and people used to ride the entire system on one token.

The Central Line is 46 miles long, and the longest subway line I've been able to find so far. I sent an email with all this information to the journalist, although to be fair, she only states that it is the MTA claiming it's the longest in the world.

How far is West Ruislip - Woodford via Hainault? It can't be much less than running to Epping.

The longest through service on the Metropolitan Line was from Aldgate to Verney Junction (until the passenger service was withdrawn beyond Quainton Road in 1936.
"Clive " shows this as 87.64 km. (calculated from Ongar.)
A few trains, some with a Pullman Car, ran daily arriving at V. Junc. with three steam hauled carriages- these may have been detached from a six carriage set from Aldgate or Baker Street at Aylesbury. The trains were hauled by Electric Locos as far as Rickmansworth.

How long was the pre-war District service from Ealing Broadway to Southend, i.e. 1 June 1910 - 30 September 1939?

I'm not sure how one strictly defines a subway line, but the soon-to-be-opened Mandurah Line in Perth which runs through new bored tunnels and underground stations under the city center (and incidentally will be free to travel on), when connected to the already existing Joondalup Line (making it essentially one line), comes in at 113.5kms (70.5 miles) long, which I think would infact take the crown as the longest subway line in the world!
Even only considering the Mandurah Line on its own it is 81.5kms or 50.6 miles.

I first travelled on the Paris RER Ligne A in the early Seventies and am a big fan! If you count the RER Lines as subways then Wikipaedia gives the following lengths:
Line A 108.5 km / 67.5 miles Line B 80.0 km / 49.8 miles Line C 185.6 km / 115.5 miles Line D 160.0 km / 99.6 miles Line E 52.3 km / 32.5 miles
Looking back, how far was, as queried before, Ealing Broadway to Southend-on-Sea by District? Must be 50 miles?

Didn't the District once run to Windsor? How long was that?
