As there are quite a few members on this forum now, I'm just wondering what sort of people post here. Obviously there are many more categories that I could have picked, but you'll have to make do with what I reckon are the most obvious ones. If you're not listed, just go with the nearest one. It's not for research or anything, just a bit of fun and curiosity!!

I'm now "ex" all sorts of things railway and other. The railway bits include guard, motorman, (LT) shunter and signalman (BR) are the ones I've been paid for. But I've also done a bit of Signal maintenance (BR & WSR) and p-way (WSR) work. Also on the WSR I drove DMU's, shovelled some coal to boil water worked as Guard, shunted and helped in the shed.

I wear a white shirt, am considered a Duty Manager by grade, I work in Service Control but will always consider myself a signalman. Puts me in a bit of a split catergory.
Oh, Service Control as it sounds posh then.

I'm sure most of you know what I do too now!! I drive trains! Curerently on the District line, previously on the Jubilee line, and previous to working for LUL, I drove trains on the mainline, working for Thames Trains at Reading.

I suppose my grade could be described as "Causer-Of-Problems" ;D
Nah, seriously, I am employed as a driver here in the Stockholm Metro. I have also become a sort of odd-job man, doing a bit of this or that as the need arises. I have, for example, done quite a bit of test train driving for the new stock and signalling systems, worked as a driver instructor, mainly for the new trains and signalling, done a bit of infrastructure work as a pilotman, worked as a shunter/depot driver and a few other things. Since I am qualified to operate on all our lines, I also do a bit of stock transfer work between the depots and workshops.
I like working like this -there's a bit of variety, and you generally won't have to bother about the travelling public when you are a pilotman on a tamping machine. In fact, they tend to run away from you, especially if you have a cracked exhaust pipe!
I am also active as a union representative, belonging to SAC, a small radical leftist union. We organise all grades in our local section -drivers, station attendants, depot staff and so on. The idea is that we, as workers on the tube, have our common interests, and splitting the workers up with different unions for each grade is something that only benefits the company. We are in a period of strong growth on the tube, which is very nice, but it also takes up a lot of our (mine and the other activists) time. Still, it's a chance to have some fun and do some good work!

There should be ONE union on the tube. That will partially defeat managments "divide & rule" policy. As for the old chestnut about "signalman representing a driver" on a disciplinary board that won't wash either as you can either conduct your own defence or ask for the appropriate grade to speak for you.

I'm a Driver at Upminster (The posh end of the District ) In my 22 years on LU I've worked on every line except the Picc, Vic and East London, I've been around a bit, I'm a bit of a slapper I'm just wondering what sort of people post here. ;D Well this one's a retired half-dead idiotic old fool living north of Watford. Surely Dave still lives around Uxbridge

I currently come under the Non-Railway section (although I did do Work Experience with LUL not too long ago) but I plan to join the LUL Apprenticeship in January next year.

People say i should be still at school, i wonder what they said to you! ;D They were quite surprised on the amount of knowledge I knew about LUL! ;D Well done - what did you do for your work experience? Was it something in the operational side? I worked on the station side of things, I was based at the GSM office at Stratford, during my time there most of the activities I did inside the office was clerical work, I learnt quite an amount of knowledge on the station side of things. I also had quite a few tours/events planned for me, which included: 1. A trip down on City & South London tunnels between Borough and King William Street. ( VERY fascinating!) Only downside to this tour was that me and the rest of the LUL staff who decided to come along for the trip went down in suits/uniform, we looked a right mess when we got back up to ground level! ;D (And I think my room is dusty! ;D) 2. A trip to Neasden SCC. 3. A Cabride covering the whole of the Jubilee Line (with an I/O driving) 4. A Cabride on the Central from Stratford - Holborn - Leytonstone with a DMT and I/O present (sitting in the drivers seat whilst the Train was being driven in ATO too!) 5. A tour of London Bridge Station and having the chance to see how things like the PED's ect, work. I met a variety of LUL Employees from all different aspects of the system during my time on Work Experience who were all very friendly and willing to help, I really enjoyed myself and gained a lot of knowledge during my two weeks with LUL. It has really made me want to do my best in School to ensure that I secure the grades needed to be able to have a chance in the LUL Apprenticeship!

Being a programmer, I've become a sort of an odd-job man, too (or a "one-man breakdown gang" to care of the tasks that should be done yesterday). ;D <offtopic> One of the first thing for the foreign companies to do when establishing in Russia is banning the unions. I came to think they have reasons to do that . </offtopic>

I am not a railway employee, but I have been interested in LU since I can remember. I have wanted to become a LU employee for many years but due to a few issues (I don't drive, I live about 50 miles away from London in Basingstoke, Hampshire, I've got quite a good job as it is and can't leave due to moving out and saving up for my wedding, you know that sort of thing), I can't really come and join LU at the moment. I would love to be a train op one day though so it might well happen! I think all the work people do on this site is excellent and long may it continue

Northfields depot have confirmed that I'm doing work experience with them in June, but it is going to be subject to a health and safety examination. I'm beginning to think that it's not going to pass it . What do you guys think? BTW my job title is "Production Manager", any ideas what I'll be doing?

BTW my job title is "Production Manager", any ideas what I'll be doing? I don't think you'll be *the* production manager. Their job is IIRC one of the top three in the depot and I think they're the one who is responsible for the workshops staff doing overhauls and the like.

BTW my job title is "Production Manager", any ideas what I'll be doing? Right, in your case a 'Production Manager' will be managing the production of tea. Enjoy! (I'm proud of the fact i NEVER made one cup of tea whilst on work experience! Oh, except for a High Court Judge. I never knew making a brew could cause such fear in a lad!)

I learnt quite an amount of knowledge on the station side of things. The best lesson you can possibily have is to stand on the gateline for a couple of hours, deal with the public, that will be the most shocking lesson you will ever learn! 3. A Cabride covering the whole of the Jubilee Line (with an I/O driving) I would think so too! It has really made me want to do my best in School to ensure that I secure the grades needed to be able to have a chance in the LUL Apprenticeship! But does the apprenticeship want you? Only Kidding Chris, glad you liked W/E, look forward to seeing you apply for the apprenticeship next year, you know where iam if you want some advice!

Hi People As My Name Sugests I Work For Chilltern Railways. Welcome, James! When I joined Thames Trains, I had my rules and regs exam with one of the managers from Chiltern! ;D That's my only link, other than the fact we drove the same traction!
