At Ruislip westbound, high on the road bridge pier at the front of the platform, is what looks like a sensor pointing down towards the track/train. It is labelled TMD2.
Anyone know what this is exactly? It has been puzzling me for ages!

Something to do with detecting either Pic or Met Stock, probably...

Could it have to do with routing reversers to the siding between Ruislip and Ickenham?

When I asked what it was for I was told that it is used to detect the presence of trains in the platform for the purposes of adjusting the volume of the automatic public address announcements.

Yes, I've seen them too. Did it have a green plastic ring around it towards the end? And was it at an upgraded station, with the white speakers? Maybe its part of the PA system? If it is what I think, you can just about see one in this photo at Loughton taken from a previous quiz (attached to the pole with 4 speakers); although it is quite box-shaped, i've seen smaller ones with just a probe too. www.sucs.org/~cmckenna/photos/quizes/tq2/August/Aug07.jpg

Ah, there's something labelled TMD at Oakwood, I assumed it must stand for Train Monitoring Device but the supervisor I asked wasn't sure exactly what it was for and I'd almost forgotten about it, actually. It emits a quite odd noise.. not even sure how to describe it, a sort of ticking, buzzing noise.
