As much as I hate to say it, this is an area where the Standard and other "commuter" newspapers could be useful.
If I can offer some thoughts;
Get in touch and remind them of the consequences of being on a electric railway. Don't bother with the simplistic legalities (which don't cause their readers any inconvenience at all) regarding trespass, concentrate on the risk to life and limb for those not versed in the railway's dangers and the dalay that clearing up the mess causes (as seen at Ealing Bdy).
Make the point that following complaints from passengers the railways now have a policy of withdrawing affected trains from service and repainting static surfaces ASAP etc etc.
Adopt the angle of what effect graffitti has on their readers (cancelled and delayed trains, higher fares and taxes etc) and I suspect you'll get a better response.
Whilst the they want the same result as everyone else, they have a different agenda which is to sell papers and reinforce the prejudices of their readers.
Don't forget that eBay and Paypal will like you somewhat less for besmirching their good name so remember they also have their agenda, like the rest of us.
Best of luck.

Have the BTP or CSC, got back to you yet? I've just seen a reply from LU Customer Services, which reads: " Thank you for your telephone call about photographs of Tube graffiti for sale on eBay. I appreciate you bringing this to our attention.
I've passed the details forward to our operational security department who work closely with the British Transport Police. Given you've also reported the sale to the BTP, I'm sure they'll liaise about this matter.
However, if someone is just taking and selling photographs, there's nothing actually wrong with that. As far as I can tell, there's nothing to suggest the photographer either is one of, or knows the graffiti vandals.
Thanks again for taking the time to contact us.
Yours sincerely
Robert Wolstenholme Customer Service Advisor Customer Service Centre" I will of course give updates of further communications WATCH THIS SPACE CAUSE I'M LIKE A DOG WITH A BONE ;D The ;D is me gnawing on something and not grinning

I pretty much agree with what AGC has said. Tailor your comments in a way that will fit in with the views of whatever sector of the media you are tackling. It helps to figure out their angle before you contact them. Like I said, the legal aspect is pretty much secondary to the story; the point that should be emphasised regarding 'trespass' is not that it is breaking the law, it is that it puts the perpetrators into areas that are not intended for the general public and in doing so exposes them to all sorts of dangers many of which can be fatal for them and for others. The sale of these CDs, the promotion of railway graffiti as an alternative artform and the naming of graffiti artists as youth-icons all help to promote this activity and to encourage youngsters to go out there and join in. Having spent their lives in a nanny state, kids are not prepared for what will happen when they cross the line and step into a world of such unimaginable dangers. I would like to say what I think about the type of person who suggests that those who do this are heroes, but for once I am lost for words.

(reply from LU) "As far as I can tell, there's nothing to suggest the photographer either is one of, or knows the graffiti vandals." If he is not one of them or does not know them, how did he get video footage of "tube and trackside damage" that has not been posted on the web?

On a complete aside, one sentence in that letter from LU customer services ties in nicely with some points that have been made elsewhere on this forum regarding photography:-
"However, if someone is just taking and selling photographs, there's nothing actually wrong with that."
So now we know.

Lady/Gents A couple of further updates After receiving the e-mail from LU Customer Services yesterday afternoon, I sneaked a few moments from work and got in touch with RAIL (emap), speaking to Chris Gilson - he checked eBay and confirmed that item 7417895622, the Graffiti Photos on CD with more than 10,000 images was still for sale. I e-mailed him a resume of what was said in the thread & my responses - I will deal with other elements from the press in due course when I'm not at work. In addition I received an automated response from eBay Customer Support (in Australia??) reporting that if I am from Law Enforcement to make contact (describing a method in which to make contact if they wished to) - I duly spoke to BTP this morning and have forwarded the e-mail onto them for their attention. I've also just seen a comment from Phil (not part of this thread) that refers to me as a 'pit-bull'... as in not letting go of this issue..... so await further updates from [shadow=red,left,300]PIT-BULL[/shadow] ;D ;D
