I have heard from an extremely reliable source that Sarah Siddons is being restored over the next few months by Metronet back to NR/LU Traction Current standards. I am led to believe that it will then be used for Charters and Railtours, though mainly on the National Rail for the time being. Very commendable of Metronet

Great news if it is true. I did ask years ago about the engineering required to convert to 3rd rail, and it seemed relatively simple. Would she not need a derogation from the requirement for yellow ends?

Great news if it is true. I did ask years ago about the engineering required to convert to 3rd rail, and it seemed relatively simple. Would she not need a derogation from the requirement for yellow ends? No 12 ran quite comfortably on a number of rail tours on Southern metals in the early 1980s. She did not have yellow ends, as steam locos do not. www.transport-of-delight.com/UK/BritishRail/SouthernElectric/Pages/12.htm

Would she not need a derogation from the requirement for yellow ends? If preserved steam locomotives do not need yellow ends on NR, why should such an option even be mentioned with Sarah? She is equally as important as they are, if not more so.

I am always concerned about today's "Jobsworths". The news seems to goo to be true, and you wonder if some problem will emerge as a result of regulations e.g. the cab devices now fitted to CLAN LINE that a derogation has previously been requested for steam locos.
I should have been on that July '83 tour, but elected to go on the earlier one instead. That first trip was cancelled because SARAH was still on blocks in Ealing Common I seem to recall, undergoing repairs. The later tour did of course run.
I must also add my sincere commendations to Metronet.

All locos that run on NR metals now HAVE to be fitted with TPWS and OTMR - an in cab recording device. All the mainline passed kettles and diesels are now fitted with these.

Can they fit the stuff, and who is going to pay as it does not come cheap?

They can fit it, but it costs the best part of 15k!

I suppose it depends who is paying. If it is Metronet paying the bills (do they own Sarah these days?) then I wouldn't expect it to be too much of a problem. Bear in mind that the Q stock restoration will cost rather more than £1m.

I am quite pleased by this bit of news! ;D ;D ;D
Fitting TPWS and OTMR to Sarah should definitely be possible, but since she differs a great deal from most bog-standard electric loco classes still in use I feel that the cost would be quite high to manufacture the one-off materials needed to make both work.

The bits of kit that actually do the work in terms of sending and receiving transmissions will be the same. The major difference will be in the brackets needed to fit them to the loco and that's a straight forward job for a competent fitter.
Ah, I've just seen the obstacle......
On reflection I think you might be right after all .....

Is this a publicity exercise by Metronet? Is it just trying to regain some sort of reputation amongst the public. I can't think why Metronet would bother doing this otherwise.
If Metronet are supporting the enthusiast movement with this, surely they would want an LU rail tour to become feasible again?

Metronet and Tube Lines as big corporations sponsor many projects including being Premier Members, or what ever it is when you give a large wad of cash to the London Transport Museum.
An LU Railtour would be LU's decision not Metronet's. LU need to make sure that Sarah Siddons will be reliable and not break down, causing delays to normal timetabled services. On NR, there are many places that services could "run-round" a stalled service, possibly with a lesser affect on the service.

Metronet are mostly portrayed as incompetents, but i guess they have a lot of people who love the railway as much as most on here (some are actually on this forum if i am not mistaken).
