Dunno where the Charity bit fits in, but when I was at Aldgate as a Box Boy in 1980 - 1982 one of the Signalmen had a locker full of Chocolate bars & cans of drink(soft). All of us box Boys used to survive on Kit Kat's or Mars Bars and a can of drink, sometimes we used to go across the road and get some breakfast but otherwise it was just chocolate & drinks. Any help to you?

Yeah, that sounds reasonable. Did the box boys regularly do that sort of thing or was it done "on the sly"?

It was only when one particular signalman was on duty that we had the chance to get the chocolate bars and drinks, the other signalmen didn't seem to want to get involved.
