I was reading this thread on Skyscraper City. There isn't a link, and I can't find anything on Metronet's site. However, dispite it seemingly being not real, I feel it's worth discussing here. Personally, if done correctly, this would be really good, though it wouldn't be needed if the current (rubbish) incarnation of crossrail gets built. I'd extend it via Leamouth, Custom House to City Airport and beyond... What are other people's thoughts Simon

Well it'd certainly be an interesting new link, and could take some pressure off of the DLR Bank branch. Assuming the 'Hammersmith & Circle line' goes ahead and the Met takes the H&City Barking section, then a branch could diverge anywhere between Aldgate East and Mile End, depending on how direct they want the link to be.
But, it'd be very costly as you well know to create this link for an SSL line, so station-to-station is very unlikely to happen. There'd have to be intermediate stops somewhere to try and get a return on the cost, perhaps diverging at Stepney Green with a station in the Mile End Stadium area (which looks like another rail blackspot).
As for further extensions, the Woolwich Common and Thamesmead areas are devoid of rail, so either could present possibilities (demographic need withstanding).

measured on Google Earth it's over 2 miles in a straight line, aldgate-Bermondsey is 1.2 miles. How do they have this line in mind?

Blimey! Did the Metronet boss really say that?!
He mentions a tube link between Aldgate and Canary Wharf and that would only entail a limited amount of work. But the whole of Aldgate would need to be rebuilt if its to work. Unless the current H+C tunnel between Liverpool Street and Aldgate East is then used as the start of the tunnel towards Canary Wharf - in which case you'd have a bit of complex tunnelling around the Aldgate East area, close to the surface.
Also another thing is that I wonder whether its wise to divert the Met onto Canary Wharf. The main peak traffic for the Met is for people who work in the City. Moorgate and Aldgate are very busy, and the Met trains reflect that in being very crowded around these stations.
So there isn't that much spare capacity in the rush hour to accommodate new traffic to/from Canary Wharf during the rush hour, which will be very high.
This could alleviate some of the pressures on the Jubilee Line though, as its effectively another direct link from North West London to Canary Wharf.
