Day off today, so a jaunt up the Met Main was to be had, as well as a few other places... Was at H-o-t-H at about 11.20 and while waiting for a Amersham train, I overheard two T/Ops talking in gerneral about the job. One of them commented that the wait for Transfers to ricky is so huge there's an estimated 12 YEAR wait for those towards the bottom!!! Phew! Thats SOME waiting list. Is this true, perhaps some of of out Met guys can confirm this.

Main line drivers jobs before the war were like hen's teeth. Men could wait 30 years and more before even touching a regulator. The war speeded things up a bit but a man could still take twelve years before getting on the bottom rung of the drivers links then another 20 years going up through the links to top rate express man.

It varies a lot for different reasons. We had a 52 week roster in 1993, but it's now 86 weeks - so that's 34 names taken off the list, on top of the people retiring/leaving/being sacked. Right now there's a lot of blokes over 50 at Ricky [Yes, it IS an old-gits depot!] so the waiting list should be moving a bit quicker in a few years time.

What about the waiting list just to be a Met driver at either crew depot? Say for example I had been a driver for around 6 months on another line how long would I have to wait?

There is a driver on here that has recently put their name down for the Met, so (if they reveal themselves), we might get an idea from them.

Well there's been a fair bunch of 'new faces' on the Met recently, including a guy I rode home in the cab with from Wembley Pk to Uxbridge last week. He has been with LUL for about 2 years, and worked on 'stations' before qualifying for 'trains'. Rickmansworth still has a long waiting list but Neasden is relatively easy at the moment.

Now why would you want to work on the Met? Even the drivers sound bored of it!
Last wednesday (2nd) I got on the 12:45 (or near that time) fast to Amersham from Finchley Road. I only went because I hadn't been in a while. Anyway, this was the most boring journey I had ever done, and it sounded like the driver thought the same as when he made an announcement, even though it was very well spooken, it was slow and deep! Poor guy!
So why do you want to work on the Met, and for those already there, how do you stay awake on the met?
P.S. Do you all get given a Metropolitan Line mug, like this driver had?

Now why would you want to work on the Met? I'd love to work on the met. You've got variety (tunnel, suburban & country sections) and you've got the best stock on the system. If I ever become an Op, the met would be my second choice (providing the 'A' stock is still running) after my beloved picc (purely because you can't go straight to the met, can you?).

The Met is the aim for a lot of people. I would have liked to go over there as a Technical Officer, but now I can work on it from the office just by doing CAD (As I cover both BCV and SSL Signals CAD). As an apprentice I asked to go over to the Met for a bit. I asked for Harrow but got offered Ricky after a few months, by which time I was settled elsewhere. (Oh and I did help the Met line out a bit when I was at Baker St, so I have just about worked over there.)
