I was at Harrow today around 1300 when train 410 was set down due to a woman in severe distress (ended up surrounded by her companion, two drivers, four SAs, a medium hat and a big hat...). The tannoy stated that the train was terminating there and that everyone should head over to platform 1.
Later at Rickmansworth I saw train 410 go through on the down, which seemed odd - when the person manning the tannoy at Harrow said that it was terminating, did he say that just to get folks off the train? Or can a train really be reversed to the southbound lines from platform 3?

No I don't think you can rev N->S at Harrow platf3 (not been there for a year). You could be right in that to get the passengers over to one they said the train wasn't going anywhere. Either that or the 410 you saw at Ricky was a new/reformed train.

The phrase 'Terminating here' will be used for any train being withdrawn from passenger service, regardless of whether that train will actually reverse at that location. In this specific instance trains terminating in platform 3 at Harrow would have to continue north to another suitable reversing point e.g. Rayners Lane, Northwood or Rickmansworth.

No TOK, trains cannot be reversed either way in Platform 3. The only way to reverse such a train N to S quickly(ish) is to run it to Rayners Lane and back. A train stalled in Platform 3 doesn't cause any real problems though (except during the Mon-Fri peaks!), as Watford trains can be routed via Plat 4 and Amershams via Plat 1 (or 4). Uxbridge trains normally use Plat 4, as you prob already know, and the reversing siding is accessed from that platform as well. I can give more details of possible moves at H-o-t-H if you're interested.

The only other reversing option I know of for southbound trains is to send them into platform 6 and back out again - but AFAIK this only allows such trains to go to Uxbridge. What other reversing moves are there?

That is correct trains can rev S->N at Harrow 6, but can only go towards Rayner's Lane.
Platform 5 can do the same, you can also shunt via the siding back into platform 4 to go North.
Platform 4 - N->S via the Siding.
Platform 3 - Nothing
Platform 2 - S->N, trains can only come from and go back to the Fast Lines
Platform 1 - N->S Detrain to rev at shunt JB98 back into plat 2.
This was done a lot during the Wembley Park work when Chiltern ran extra Harrow to Marylebone services.

Thanks for the info C5 - I'd seen the platform 1 and 2 shunts before, as well as the platform 6 shunt and the platform 5-to-4 shunt also. Interestingly enough though I've never seen the platform 4-to-5 shunt - are there any north-to-south Harrow reversers anymore?

There are booked "Rusty Rail" trains that do the N->S move. There are some trains that are booked to reverse at Northwood but usually rev at Harrow MT to Neaden depot. Will have a look to see times.
