I had no idea they'd repainted any of the 59s! It looks quite good, apart from the filthy roof.
But why did they bother so late in their life?

Wasn't it a "one-off" for the Northern Centenary, or something similar? Rather like the "heritage" train.

It was done as an experiment. As the rest of the underground's fleet was being planned for refirb, and the 95 stock wasn't yet on the cards, the mighty 59 stock was still going to be around for the forseeable future as LUL couldn't afford to replace them. As the 59's were looking a bit shabby, a unit was facelifted so the cars looked brighter, with the then new Northern line moquette of salmon and an internal 2 tone colour scheme (light and dark grey, like the C stock doors IIRC). Wooden flooring was retained. Outside, the cars were painted in corporate livery. It was only ever intended to be a light refirbishment as the projected lifespan of the 59's didn't warrant a full refirbishment. In the end a PFI with GEC Alsthom was made where the 95TS would be built and leased to LUL, thus ending the problem with LUL not being able to afford new trains for the Northern. As a result the 59TS refirbishment project was abandoned and not persued. The heritage train (or mars bar as i've heard it called) was done in time for the line's centenary in 1990. It didn't stay together for long as the 2 heritage units didn't like each other, so had to be kept split for operational reasons.

Hmm - so had the 59ts refurb programme gone ahead, they might still be running? If the 95ts weren't to come on stream until later.

That looks quite good actually. A very rare sight I imagine. Amazing how that looks better in Red, white & blue, than the newer stock do! Can anyone tell me what this ugly thing is - album4007.fotopic.net/p294700.htmlI THINK it looks like the track recording train?

Converted from 2 1960 stock DM's and a 73TS trailer. The train comes complete with its own IT suite and kitchen!!

I seem to remember seeing a photo of that somewhere (in an office me thinks). I've seen one as well with the three experimental liveries that were done.

LU move customers from A to B, they used to do it via 'C'.

I was there and video'ed a lot of it (the old format, was it Video 8?). They called it 'The Rainbow Train' event and all sorts of ministers and top brass turned up. I got some good footage of a 67 coming through Wembley Park, and managed to get into the sidings and video both on and off the trains. I have no idea where the tapes are now though, before anyone asks!

Yes I've seen that, wasn't it part of some visibility testing they were carrying out? It looked like an unrefurbished 73 stock.
