very very scary.... & I bet their undercarriage needed changing after... I'm not talking about the plane BTW I have to say that Lars Tretau's image is extremely impressive and demonstrates the flexibility of aircraft wings

Sod being a passenger on that!! ;D ;D I actually think pilots are on pretty poor pay when you consider just how skilled they need to be. Whilst it is true to say that there is potential for upwards of £90,000 - £100,000; you have to have experience, fly the right type/size of aircraft and be employed by one of the 'big boys' (ie, British Airways). The average pay is more likely closer to the the £35,000 - £40,000 bracket, and for a budget airline like Easy Jet, I'd rather be a train op thanks.

Quite - I'm told there's a T/Op at West Ruislip with a full commercial licence who earns far more driving trains!

That's one scary approach! I hope it really was a freak accident and that the crosswinds were within established limits for Lufthansa/aircraft. If you look at the picture carefully, the left wingtip touches the ground...very scary as a stronger impact would have snapped the wing and caused a fireball. TomWow...something must be wrong with the "free market" system when you earn more pushing buttons rather than flying aircraft. Yes, I understand that t/ops are taught all kinds of emergency procedures and training but same goes for aircraft pilots.
